I head up to Milwaukee once or twice a year, and the past couple trips I've just been hitting up the same old spots again and again (Roman's, Sugar Maple, Comet Cafe).

So I was wondering if any places had opened up within the past 6-8 months that locals were excited about? Maybe some place that hasn't even been around long enough to generate much buzz...

Like I said, I've hit up all the major destination--even Miller--and so I'm specifically looking for spots that are either new or just fly under the radar for whatever reason.

I'd recommend World of Beer over Comet Cafe. Much much better selection there.
Benno's in West Allis also has a great tap list.

The owner's of Burnheart's is opening a restaurant called Goodkind. Pretty much going to be Burnhearts with food. Sign me up.

Sounds like you exhausted most of your best options. Where are you staying and how far are you willing to travel?

Ps. I'm disturbed yet, oddly intrigued by your avatar and the twisted human being who must have made it.

If you haven't been, go to Stubby's - they have an amazing tap list right now including Lakefront Johnson DIPA, Tallgrass Ethos, Black Husky Howler Imperial IPA, Great Lakes Rye of Tiger, GF Palate Wrecker, & Sierra Nevada Harvest. For full tap list go to:

The garage just reopened last week after a 3 month renovation. They said they were going to be more beer focused after the renovation but I haven't stopped by yet to verify that. They are next door to world of beer so you could check out both places.

I also 2nd the stubbys recommendation. If you haven't gone there yet it's a good place.

Reading the article on OnMilwaukee, I would say that this is not just Burnhearts with food. Odd Duck / Roots meet Burnhearts? Yes please.

Yeah I didn't put enough emphasis on how good the food is going to be. From the little I have had from them so far at various events, I am really looking forward to it. Also, another place opening in Bay View is Vanguard. Beer/whiskey and sausages and poutine.

Rays Growler Gallery will be open next month. Rare beer and beers that cant be gotten anywhere else. Will be filling any growler that is clean, which is a plus. Grand opening announcements will be soon.

Since I have no idea where you have been I will suggest the following.

I must admit for living in Milwaukee since 2005, I missed the boat on Oscar's Burgers. If looking for another burger joint that has been around, but not a "typical" known spot head to Solly's.

If you haven't already head to the Estabrook Beer Garden on a nice day to do some outside drinking. Don't know exactly when but they are opening one up at Humboldt Park as well this summer.

Also, would not recommend Stubby's, was ripped off and won't be going back. Just a warning, have cash if you are going to go.

Don't know how new it is, but I went to the Odd Duck a couple of weeks ago and thought the food was outstanding and the beer selection was very respectable. Cocktails were great, too. I found the beer list on their website to be pretty accurate.

Just dropping by to add Hotel Foster to the list. Been around for awhile, still worth the visit.

If I may ask, how'd you get ripped off? I once had 2 beers put on my tab that were from the guys next to me. I caught it, and it was taken care of. Even with that, it's still one of my favorite places to go. Food is solid as is the beer selection.

I'll second the Benno's suggestion. I live about a mile away from there and it's a great place away from the city

Lakefront is starting "techincal tours" on Sundays this summer. Should be a good time.

Craft & Vessel is a new growler spot opening in early July, up in Shorewood.

Rumpus Room is a bit pricey ($1-2 more than they should be per beer) but offer a 2-4-1 Wisconsin happy hour M-F and have arguably the best tap list in town. Last week they had Illumination, Permanent Funeral, Plead the Fifth, Barrel-aged BORIS, and Sproose II all on at the same time.

    A couple more ideas:
The Milwaukee Brewing Co puts on a generous tour......

Cafe Bavaria recently opened in Wauwatosa. It is directly across a pedestrian bridge from Cafe Hollander, which is the shares the same ownership. Cafe Bavaria has a large number of German beers on tap, as well as many more in the bottle.

Someone mentioned the Estabrook Beer Garden. Good call. Nice selection of HB Munich beers. North of downtown.

Another beer garden to consider is one that is not even a mile walk from Cafe Bavaria along the Oak Leaf Trail (N Menomonee River Pkwy) in Wauwatosa: The Landing at Hoyt Park. Various tap beers, some micros and some imports.

The Über Tap Room (connected to the Cheese Mart downtown at N Old World Third St at W Highland Av) has an expanded tap list of mostly Wisconsin micros.

Had dinner at Goodkind with the wife on Friday. Great beer list, great food. They had a Brandy Barrel Aged Red Ale from Central Waters, that included some of Goodkind's house-made bitters. "Call Me Old Fashioned" was the name of the beer I believe, and it was quite good.

Rumpus Room seems to not get mentioned a ton on here, but every time I go there, their tap list is solid to awesome. Definitely the best selection in the downtown area, imo.

Yeah, they do a good job getting some sought after stuff and mixing up the tap list.
I prefer a dive bar like Burnheart's (also has a great taplist, but not as many taps), sometimes Rumpus is over-run by downtown suit-and-tie types at happy hour. The food is legit, though.
I'm not sure why Rumpus' taplist is always just a touch better than Sugar Maples. They have so many taps, but usually half of them are so-so craft beers.
Romans' taplist is also always interesting, but again, it doesn't seem as packed with awesome beers as Rumpus.
Riverwest Filling Station always has a decent taplist, but their beers don't move quickly so they aren't always the freshest. Most of them are available for fills, though.

Rumpus has growlers on display, not sure if they fill there, though.

Whole Foods only has 5 taps (+1 reserved for wine) but full pints are only $3-6, and I don't know of anywhere else where you can randomly find a pint of Zombie Dust for $4.
