I hope you smacked her and said, "No, I meant DOUBLE INDIA PALE ALE, DIPA" and then reprimand her for her insolence"

(Kidding of course, for the sensitive types )

Nope! The only reason I feel comfortable saying no is because of my background in classical voice. You can have a 'hint' of the 'r' sound in it, but would not pronounce a hard r. Not to get nerdy about it TOO much, but they way the last part of the word would be pronounced - 'nә' - know that doesn't help everyone, but in a phonetic alphabet translation, that would be it!

I said else where it is a soft r, not the hard rolled R. Next time in Germany I will listen with some interest as I travel in Hesse and Bavaria.
My German friends would say the "perfect" German was spoken in Hanover, but I have never been there. Maybe I just know southern dialects.

Yeah, I agree that acronyms don't really have a correct pronunciation. However, if we want to pick the nits (and isn't that what this site is for?) I would say from having taught phonetic reading for more than a few years, that a single vowel between consonants is usually short, and ditto a single a at the end of a word. Which would make it dip-uh. And the guy getting bent over pronunciation of an acronym is simply a dip.

The thought of "DIPA" pronounced like Ah-nold saying "diaper" cracked me up. XD

Also, how is "Urquell" in Pilsner Urquell pronounced? Don't think I saw that one mentioned in here. I've been guessing that it's "ur-kwell" but not sure if that's accurate (especially considering it's Czech... I wouldn't have guessed that "cz" would make a "ch" sound either if I didn't already know, so who knows how other combinations of letters might be pronounced.)

This is why I always write Imperial IPA / IIPA. A "dipa" is what people in Massachusetts put on their infants!

It's not so important that you can pronounce it, but it is real important that you can pick it out on a menu. Then all you have to do is point and say "I'll have that." And if you wait until someone else orders it first and then say "I'll have the same" you may get the wrong beer if the first person mispronounced the name.
