It only took a year, and their website is still "coming soon," but Meadhall's finally put their taplist online at their Facebook page and is promising twice-weekly updates.

I mean, on the whole, it's not bad--plenty of decent offering in the $6-7/"pint" range, which (regrettably) seems to be the new standard for Boston. But then you've got things like this:

    Delerium Tremens: $9.50 for 8.5oz
    Tank 7: $6.50 for 8.5oz
    Chimay White: $12 for 8.5oz
    Tripel Karmeliet: $9 for 6.75oz
    Houblon Chouffe: $9 for 6.75oz
    Allagash Curieux: $9 for 8.75oz
    Three Philosphers: $7 for 5oz
    Schneider Hopfenweisse: $12 for 10oz
75 Minute: $30 for 750mL bottle (50% more than the Chimay and Westmalle 750s).

All of these prices look like misprints they're so bad. I mean, if you have to charge $9 for 6.75oz of Tripel Karmeliet, why not just sell the 750s? They're about the same price as Chimay and Westmalle, so they're probably be priced at $20, except you'd get almost 4x more beer for just over 2x the price. Why isn't Tank 7 the same price as Hennepin? They're about the same at retail, yet Meadhall charges about double the price of Hennepin.

I'd accuse them of trying to rip people off, but many of their other prices are perfectly reasonable. It's like they set the prices for pints or 13oz tulips, but then started using the tiny branded glassware without adjusting the price.

Bros/BA, have you asked them about this? You've partnered with them for a number of events...

Why would you go here pay those prices after considering the competition around the corner?

Wow those prices are criminal. And BTW, you should be complaining about $7.50 16oz pours of SN Torpedo, not just accepting it as the standard. The place was a disaster from the start, I am shocked the bros. are giving them business.

I'm a little surprised too, given that they've voiced their displeasure with the general Boston-area price creep.

I mean, I totally understand that the they probably want a big space with a lot of beers on tap for the ACBF event. But the pricing is inexplicable and so far disconnected from "beer advocacy" that I am truly confused.

If I were to ever go back to Meadhall...which I probably never will...I would drink Blunderbuss at CBC until I couldn't feel feelings and then stumble over to Meadhall and vomit on the bar.

In my mind, the confusing thing is while many of the beers are accurately priced (most of the stuff that's in 14oz+ servings), you have these oddballs where it looks like someone simultaneously doubled the price and halved the pour size. The menu would make more sense if all the IPAs were $7.50/12oz.

They've had this problem from the start. They have shown themselves incapable of accepting customer feedback. It started with that clown manager who quit shortly after doublecharging hundreds of people and then acting like it was the customers' fault.

I mean, the only explanations are 1) they have absolutely no clue what they are doing or 2) they pay so much for that space that the only way they can stay afloat is ripping off customers. I can't imagine that 2) will be successful as a long term business plan.

They seem to have listened to their customers about the prices on the dinner menu. Instead of $26+, most stuff is now around $20. Of course, maybe what they were listening to were their sales numbers; I bet the burger outsold everything else combined because it was the only thing under $25.

Smuttynose ipa pint $6.90, no wonder I drink mostly at home. $9 for a 90'minute is pretty funny. Bring on the overhead, cost of business preachers

True this. Considering a 4-pack of Torpedo tall-boys is ~ $8.50 they should be embarrassed charging $7.50/"pint".
One visit to MH was plenty for me.

A similar thread could go on for 5 Horses Tavern in Davis Sq. Pricing there is Bukowski-esque (tho I shouldn't be surprised since all the people involved with the venture are Buk's refugees).

Threads like these are why I drink at CBC more than anywhere else in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville.

You were looking at ABV, so adjust your prices to the still ridiculous amounts of $6.50 and $8.00. You were probably distracted by the weirdness of using two decimal places for ABV when a total of three beers on the whole menu even require it, and when it means practically nothing at all.

A question for Todd and Jason: when hosting events at certain locations, is it considered a form of sponsorship from the location? Does a place like Meadhall have to pay to have this event held there?

I hope not, and I doubt it. My bet is the Bros. just wanted a big space with a lot of beers. I guess we should let them explain. I hope they'd reconsider for the future.

I went back to Meadhall 2-3 weeks ago for the first time in a while. I've bashed them plenty on here in the past, but I'll be the first to say "it's not that bad" anymore.

For starters, as pointed out, they got their food prices way down. And their food is actually really good. Priced in line with CBC but heartier portions. That cuts costs for a meal big time.

As for the beer... yes, there are some apeshit crazy prices, and I feel bad for the people that order them not knowing better. But if you know your shit, it's not hard to drink 'reasonably'. They do two things I really like - 1) they serve every beer in its proper glass, and 2) they actually label the ounces you receive on the menu, not the size of the container. So in most cases, you actually end up getting more liquid than stated.

For example on reasonable beer prices, when I went I had a .5L Aventinus for $8.50 or $9 (I think it's up to $11 at Jacob Wirth, only other place I ever see it). A Baby Tree 13oz-ish pour (in the PT wine-like glass) for $7, and a Pretty Things X Mild pint for $1 (it was a anniversary special). My wife had a Mayflower Porter pint for $6 (14oz liquid), and another porter (Avery maybe, 16oz liquid) for $6.50 I believe. None of that is out of the ballpark with any other Boston/Cambridge bar.

So if you go, just be careful.

Now, all of that said, the dog in the lab is precisely how I envision them setting prices as well. A 5oz pour of Three Philosophers for $7 has to be a joke. But as bad as some are, others are almost cheap when you factor in serving size. For example, Hennepin pint for $6? That's a $7 tulip at most places...

Great post. My feelings exactly about this place. If you drink intelligently there you should be fine. Not a place I go out of my way to get to often, but I've been there a handful of times. Now......Five Horses Tavern mentioned above......they're even more expensive than Redbones.

I was gunna say these prices seem right around the same as redbones. Stopped in there last week for a quick lunch. Well, lunch didnt turn out too be so quick, and my wallet really paid for it. I know I cant complain because I was fine paying those prices at the time, but yea some beers just seem to be a bit higher than they normally should be.

Went a couple times, but haven't been there in months. In addition to points others have brought up, I had frustrating experiences with the beer list each time I was in. Obviously due to turnover, the menu and board had variations and neither was particularly up to date. I had multiple "sorry, we're out of that"s and eventually was preparing myself with multiple choices. If it was the only game in town, it's easy enough to shrug off and deal with. With the CBC and Lord Hobo in the vicinity, I haven't felt compelled to go back.
