First day off since last Tuesday, and I've decided to join the breakfast club. Founders Breakfast Stout and an Auntie Anne's pretzel for breakfast.

Best by July. Poured May 29th. $2.79 single.

Appearance: Aggressive pour filled the pint glass perfectly. Creamy off-white head with a slight tan hue. The beer is slightly hazy with a deep golden/light amber color. Pretty much a wall of lacing down the glass. Awesome. (4.75/5)

Smell: One interesting thing I pick up right away are what seem to be some sort of pale malt that I don't get too often in this style. There's also a pine hop aroma with citrus underneath that. I also get a funky sort of smell to it that maybe isn't supposed to be there (though I've had it in some beers where it was there on purpose), and it's almost like a sweaty sock or old cheese. Is that the yeast? That smell is probably a reach as it's there very slightly, but I'm picking it up, and it's intriguing me a little bit, but at the same time putting me off... I mean, who wants those smells with the rest of the aromas? (3.75/5)

Taste/feel: Interesting and distinct -- in a world full of DIPAs, a lot of them have very similar flavor profiles, but Blast! has something unique about it, and I'm not too sure what it is. Firstly, I feel like they use a malt not-so-commonly-used in a DIPA -- a really pale, sweet malt... almost like crystal? There's also a huge piney hop profile that's accentuated by citrus and maybe some mango/papaya with a tea sort of ester. Finish is sweet and juicy, but at the same time semi-dry and spicy. Awhile after the sip there's a mild lingering bitterness, but overall, this is a pretty sweet DIPA. This beer has a medium/full body with about a moderate carbonation with a slight prickliness. Again, if you're craving a sweet, malty, but still pleasantly hoppy DIPA, this ought to be right in your wheelhouse. (4.25/5, 4/5)

I'm drinking this one down fast -- it's drinkable as hell, and quite unique, like I said. $2.79 for a single bottle may seem a bit high, but considering the prices of some other DIPAs out there that I find less successful, it's not too bad. The bottle says "strangely quaffable and oddly compelling", and that's exactly what I thought before even reading that on the label.

    (4.25/5)

    4.15/5

Good morning BAs - technically it's still AM here in the east. Had to take my wife and her friend to PGH airport earlier so now I get to have my breakfast beer. In keeping with my self-imposed theme today's fabulous selection is:

This guy is delicious - wonderfully grapefruity - just a joy to drink! Too bad it isn't available around here - I got this jewel in Michigan a couple of weeks back.

I am still completely unable to pour a proper Black & Tan, but this was still amazingly delicious!
