ESCONDIDO, CA (June 2, 2014) – Stone Brewing Co. designed the Stone Stochasticity Project as a playful outlet for making diverse limited-release beers without adherence to a specific brewing schedule or strict parameters. There is little-to-no logical association between past beers in this series and the one being released today. The Stone Stochasticity Project isn’t about logic. It’s about being stochastic. So, beginning today,Stone Stochasticity Project Quadrotriticale, a Belgian-style quadrupel ale brewed with a modern specialty grain called triticale, is available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at select retailers nationwide.

Stone Stochasticity Project Quadrotriticale has some history at Stone. Several years ago, Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele developed a recipe for a Belgian-style quadrupel ale brewed with triticale, a hybrid of rye and wheat grains. The recipe was considered as a possible brew for the Stone 10.10.10 Vertical Epic Ale release, but it was ultimately decided that beer would be a strong golden Belgian ale brewed with triticale, since there had already been two Belgian quad-inspired Stone Vertical Epic Ale beers. So the Belgian quad recipe was filed away…but not forgotten. The Stone Stochasticity Project provided the avenue to revive the recipe and share it with the world.

Flaked triticale provides Stone Stochasticity Project Quadrotriticale with the subtly spicy character of rye and a smooth mouthfeel akin to wheat, which also helps offset the syrup-like body traditionally associated with quadrupel-style ales. The addition of dark Belgian candi sugar renders the beer deep amber in color while bringing forth prune, raisin and molasses flavors. The Belgian yeast strain Ardennes provides tropical fruit and banana characters while also incorporating very light pepper and clove notes.

“The Stone Stochasticity Project serves as our brewing playground, giving us the opportunity to learn about new ingredients and experiment with beer styles that we might not have a chance to brew as a special release Stone beer,” said Steele. “When I first learned about the premise for Stone Stochasticity Project, I was thrilled at the possibility of resurrecting my recipe for a Belgian quad with triticale. We were shooting to develop a good solid quad recipe, add triticale and then see what the final result would be. Once we sampled the five-barrel pilot batch, we were really impressed and decided to make it a Stone Stochasticity Project beer.”

Stone Stochasticity Project Quadrotriticale may be enjoyed now or saved for a special time in the future. If saved, it is suggested storing the bottle at proper cellaring temperatures (55°F or lower) for several months or a few years. Over time, the beer will grow even smoother while developing more prevalent raisin and brown sugar flavors.

The hop masters experimenting a bit. I'll try it.

Had this tonight; not sure it lives up to the claim that they cut down the sweetness, but a tasty beer nonetheless.

Had it tonight, too. It was a bit sweet at first, but got much better as I drank it and as it warmed up.

Still waiting on Collective Distortion IPA. Can't wait to get this. I really wish that Varna Necropolis was available out here.

As far as I know Varna Necropolis was not available anywhere but brewpub/stores—we get more or less all Stone stuff here, and didn't see that. Collective Distortion was meh. Quadro was good, though I'll probably let my next one sit for 6 months or so and see how that treats it.

Yeah, I assume that was due to the limited barrel aging that they did on it. I just found it surprising that they announced it as if it was going to be this big release, especially since it was also when they came out and told us that they were the ones behind the Stochasticity Project. I got all excited for it, but then its release came and went, which is when my MD Stone rep said that it was only for Stone stores and what not.

Really looking forward to trying this I don't think it will be amazing but it sounds intriguing.

Quadrotriticale has reached western PA... believe it or not. Advertised cost was $11, reasonable? Got my entire haul for about 25% off, seemingly because I am a loyal customer. Saving my bottle to share with my homebrew buddy who has a thing for Belgians. Gladly grabbed a few bottles from a Stone mixed-12 to go along with my preferred styles as well... about to tap into a Ruination.

Stone is not a brewery known for its subtlety and finesse. I usually drink Stone when I want a hop bomb and want to obliterate my taste buds. So when I saw this, I was expecting hop bomb, I couldn't have been more wrong. I tried it tonight and was REALLY surprised at how much I liked it. It's not quite in the realm of amazing but its solidly in the realm of damn good. Much like you, I found that as it warmed up the flavors really started to come into balance. Drink it too cold and the sweet/floral/fruit flavors tend to dominate the malt a bit too much. Let it warm up and all of a sudden its like a picture coming into focus. Truly a masterful combination here, the more I drank it the more I enjoyed it. I actually found myself a little sad as I reached the bottom of the bottle because I knew that soon it would be finished. That to me is the sign of a good beer.

Sounds good just hope it's not as half assed as most american quads. Will definitely be giving it a fair shot though as the Triticale sounds very interesting.

Hit SC today and I grabbed a bottle. I looked at/through the bottle while holding it to a light and it's completely filtered. No floaters of any kind and it's totally see-through. Not sure how it can be called a Quad. I plan on drinking it this weekend. Hopefully it's good. But it was only $6.99. Great price!
