Really enjoyed this doppelbock last year, so I was happy to see its return on tap today during brunch. For those who are familiar with it from years past -and- have had the 2014 release, I'm curious to hear feedback. The complexities and melanoidins I remember and enjoyed seem to be absent this year, replaced by the characteristics of an under-attenuated red ale with hints of cherry. Thoughts?

I had a glass of St. Victorious a few days ago at the Victory Brewpub and my experience was drastically different from yours. My St. Victorious was full of complexity and if I had to use one word to describe my drinking experience it would be glorious.

@Bierman9 , what are your thoughts?

    Cheers!

P.S. I wonder how old your keg was? I have had bottles of St. Victorious which were one year old and that beer sounds more like what you are describing. My one year bottles had a vinous quality to it and the dark malt flavors were more subdued compared to a younger St. Victorious.

I still miss this beer here in NJ. Why oh why did they stop bottling this delicious brew?

Victory has been 'transitioning' over the past year or so with the opening of their Parkesburg facility.

It is my understanding that they will again bottle St. Victorious in the future with limited distribution: PA (and maybe surrounding states?).

Maybe Jim (@Starkbier ) can provide more input here?

    Cheers!

Then I am stumped. Your drinking experience was very different from mine.

    Cheers!

My experience a month or so ago was pretty much the same as Jack's. Is it possible the keg had just been tapped and the lines not thoroughly flushed of the earlier beer on that tap?

I'll look for it again at a different location
