Yes, another dreaded "visiting Colorado" question but with a different twist, I swear. Usually when beer vacationing, I stay in the middle of the city and just walk/cab to everything, preferably walking. However, I don't have a sense of how feasible this is for my upcoming trip. We're staying in Westminster as we're planning spending time in Boulder (1 day), Fort Collins (1 day), and Denver (2 days) and so we'll have a car. I'm trying to figure out where would be the best place to leave the car at the beginning of the afternoon and then drive again after dinner to the hotel or if that's even possible if driving during the afternoon is required.

Here's my rough itinerary (each morning will be spent hiking in the great outdoors by each city):

Thursday - Boulder. Lunch at Mountain Sun, touristing with the family on Pearl Street, Avery, maybe Backcountry, dinner at Efrain's II.

Friday - Fort Collins. Lunch at Tap and Handle or Restaurant 415, Odell, New Belgium tour, couple of bookstores, dinner at Choice City.

Saturday - Denver - Lunch at Comida (The Source), Crooked Stave, Tattered Cover E. Colfax, Capital Hill Books, Station 26, Comrade, 16th street mall, Euclid Hall for dinner. I think we'll have to drive during the afternoon as we want to see different parts of Denver; where to park before dinner? Also, can't tell from Google Maps a walk that may look doable (a mile or 2) but then someone telling us, "you don't want to walk through THAT neighborhood with your family" (2 boys, 13 and 11).

Sunday - Denver - Lunch at Freshcraft, Tattered Cover (LoDo), Mr. B's, Renegade, Falling Rock, Great Divide, dinner at Hops and Pie. I hope that this day is all walkable.

    Monday - home to Virginia

    Thoughts or advice?

    Thanks.

Ft. Collins now has a MAX transportation thing, so makes it very easy to get around and you can also rent a bike from the bike library. I would do lunch at Choice City then you should be good for the rest of the day (great Rueben)! Then maybe hit up Tap and Handle (best tap selection in Ft. Collins IMO) or 415 for a light dinner.

Thursday- Avery is a ~5 mile drive to the east from Pearl St (M Sun is on Pearl). It is then a 4 mile drive back west on the same road back to Backcountry Pizza then 5 miles back east on the same road to Efrains. It makes more sense to Backcountry before Avery. If you go to Avery I would stop by Flatirons Upslope (3 minute drive away).

Sunday- Park anywhere in LODO you can find a parking space. You will basically be revisiting the area you ended Saturday on.

You'll be fine walking from Tattered Cover to Euclid Hall, I would suggest staying west of Colorado & Colfax though if you're aiming on walking around East Denver. The neighborhoods around that area are nicer and generally safe at most hours of the day. You might get some rowdier crowds later at night but LoDo is very tame compared to most other cities.

Parking and walking-wise, the only area I'd full on avoid is the area just north of Great Divide. You can still walk north from that area (if you want to do Epic, Black Shirt, or the Source) but it's wiser to go 4 blocks west down near the ballpark. Ditto with parking.
You can't walk to Renegade from downtown very easily, but the light rail will take you there in about 10 minutes. Just get off at 10th and Osage. It's only a few minutes from there. Breck's 471 location is just down the street from there, too.
Hop & Pie is another animal. That's out of walking range for most people. You'll probably need to drive or at least grab some bikes for that. You can certainly try to walk it, but it'll take a while.

Yes, Upslope is worth checking out. We walked there from Avery, not even a half mile walk.

Looks like everyone has you covered for logistics... I just wanted to point out that this is a strange pick. I personally would never recommend Efrain's, especially to an out of towner. If you have a specific reason for going here that's cool, I just know if I were in your shoes I would be a little bummed going here instead of the tons of awesome places in Boulder.

Ft Collins is fairly walkable. Boulder is walkable...Avery a bit far, though.

Denver: Since you'll be walking anyway, may as well park at a Light Rail station outside of downtown, then take that downtown (or wherever) and walk from there. Downtown parking is expensive and driving down there can drive you bonkers :grimacing:
You could also rent bicycles at various places. Not the best machines, but could be fun

True. It's one of my favorite breweries in town, so I should have known that :grinning:

In my case I have to drive across town to get to either, so I've never really pondered tag teaming them. Especially if I want to have more that 1 beer at each.
While I love Hop & Pie, it seems like every time I go there the wait is more than an hour. I've gotten in a habit of only going on weekdays and off hours.

You might want to swap TRVE in for Renegade. The music is a little loud but the beer is (IMO) much better. Plus you can drive there pretty easily. Breakfast at Denver Biscuit Co on S. Broadway would also be a good call. Great food and good taps.

If you're gonna do that, then switch Lowdown for TRVE....

...and down the rabbit hole we go...:grimacing:

maybe I mis-comprehended but I believe he was saying "East Colfax Tattered Cover" and that one is a HIKE to Euclid Hall. [seanchai--there is a Tattered Cover Lodo that is pretty close to Euclid Hall and some of the other places you've mentioned, more convenient than the one out on East Colfax.]

Of course seanchai could really immerse himself in Colfax culture in the most intense way possible, by taking the number 15 bus back and forth from the RTD 16th St Mall Station to the East Colfax Tattered cover....that's a party.

I would also suggest there are some rough spots amongst the 40 blocks of East Colfax that lie west of Colorado Boulevard, too, even the 30 or so between Tattered Cover and the Capitol. More flotsam and detritus than actually dangerous folks, of course, but a few of the latter.

I don't think Saturday or Sunday are remotely walkable with an 11 year old, unless he's a 99th percentile kid in terms of patience AND endurance. Even then; Comrade has to be 4-5 miles from Station 26, and both of them are at least 5 miles from the 16th St Mall, or from Capitol Hill Books a little east of the mall.

Edit--yeah Capitol Hill Books to Station 26 to Comrade is per google maps a 13.1 mile hike. (But you could hit Tattered Cover East Colfax en route! Also Cheeky Monk)

If you're gonna hit a bottle shop, most new releases hit Thurs or Friday and will probably be picked clean by Sunday, especially at Mr. B's. I'd hit it early Sat based on your itinerary.

Just looking to mix it up from regular bar food; supposedly they have great green chile. I would love to hear any suggestions you might have.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't real clear in my original post. I fully anticipate driving from the Source to Tattered Cover E. Colfax/Capitol Hill books then to Station 26 and then Comrade. The walking part mostly covered the other three days.

TRVE with the family? True, it has been a few weeks since we all went to a metal bar
