Looking for tips on good local brews from New Jersey. Otherwise which regional breweries (NY, MA etc.) might I be able to find while visiting that I could not get in Chicago?

God I love these threads. Everyone reading this, please remember SEEKABREW.COM where you can compare distro between states. Now, are you looking for some beers to try at a bar? If so, look for Kane and Carton on tap. If looking for stuff to bring back, there's not too much that nj has that Illinois doesn't. Nothing too great, that is. 21st ammendment, captain lawrence, dc brau, elysian, flying fish, ithaca, terrapin, troegs, weyerbacher. Specifically, if fresh, grab some flying fish exit 16, captain lawrence imperial ipa, ithaca flower power, and elysian released their dayglow ipa a week or two ago and it's mighty tasty. And depending on where you're staying, you can hit up Kane and Carton or even NYC or PA.

Kane is an absolute must IMO, and Carton is also excellent! Carton is releasing Monkey Chased the Weasel in cans at the brewery this Sunday I believe.

Yeah, Kane and Carton, avoid all the others. Tired Hands is not too far over the border in PA. Go to Maloney's in Matawan, NJ, he has 100 taps and an entire section dedicated to NJ only beers.

Where did you hear this? I haven't seen that anywhere, but this isn't the first time I'm hearing of weasel in cans.

Is Kane pretty widely available or would I have to go to the brewery to grab a few bottles to bring home?

I wouldn't say "avoid all the others"... Flying Fish has some really good beers, and River Horse has some good ones as well.

Not sure what you are looking for specifically (i.e., bottle shops, drafts @ bars, brewery visits, etc), but as a frequent visitor to NJ from OH (long story, there is a woman involved!), I would also recommend Kane, Carton, Flying Fish, River Horse, Triumph, Harvest Moon, Iron Hill (several locations)

    Check here for more info...http://newjerseycraftbeer.com/new-jersey-breweries/
    and here....http://www.njbeer.org/

While the beer scene is not as "thriving" as here in NE Ohio where I am from, it has come a long way!

Get yourself some Carton Boat beer, for sure....tasty stuff!

Don't bother trying for bottles. With the exception of a rare bottle release, there are none. Growlers at the brewery though. And they'll fill any growler.

I saw a post about it either in a njcraftbeer e-mail or on facebook somewhere. But more importantly I had it confirmed by a very reliable inside source that will remain unnamed =)

    Carton Boat Beer.

And if you're into 80's music, Bon Jovi, I guess.

Its been said so many times, but one can't stress how good Kane and Carton are - and they aren't far from each other. They are a must. And if you're actually traveling to MA then pick up some Spencer Trappist.

Good recommendations already. Personally, would focus on Kane and Carton, and if you have time Weyerbacher in Easton, PA is <5 miles across the NJ/PA border. NJ is somewhat lacking in breweries, but the state has some of the best beer distribution in the country, so check beer stores for interesting out-of-state stuff too.

Kane's website lists the places it's available for growler fills. The spirits in toms river is where I go. Their head high IPA is awesome. So is their Morning Bell, stout and local coffee.

    Where in NJ?

If you will be in central Jersey just hop into New Brunswick, go to the George St. Ale House, World of Beer, and Destination Dogs, and have yourself a grand ol' time. Then take a cab to either Tapastre in Somerville or Gusto's in East Brunswick and continue the fun.
