It's a tickerfactory. Their entire business model. Undnerattenuated sweet crapola for the most part. If they even make regular offerings they rarely make it down to SD for lack of...well..whatever.

    FIFY, Tickerection!

Would seem easier (and more appropriate since these are your most loyal customers?) to just randomly select 180 RS members with the right of first refusal on something like this. . .

    No lines. No cash.

    No skin off my back:

Tart of Darkness, Filmishmish, Sour in the Rye, Oude Tart, GFAR, Mother Funker, Berazzled, Carmen, ISO:FT, Marron Acidifie, Hottenroth, Melange #1, Pinotlambicus, Trois Poulais Francais > Wanderer

That would be me (as far as missing out in December, but I'm not the only one) There was some line cutting that time, but it wasn't that bad from what I saw. My gripe, and my FB post, was more that the Bruery turned away about 12 to 16 people or so that day in December, myself included, when they knew full well they had another 30 + cases of the stuff. Since they have done this same setup of a 180 bottle release for wanderer twice now since December. Why they didn't just open another case, to at least accommodate those that waited in line, then cut it off to anyone that shows up after the line was gone. If it was truly out, then it's out, and I wouldn't say this, but the reality was they had more, quite a bit more to easily allow everyone in the line that day to buy one bottle.

Anyhow, at I've have had it once on draft, just never able to buy a bottle, yet. Hopefully it's made again & in larger quantities, but perhaps it won't be.

As for this recent incident, I wasn't there this go round, but sad that these things happen. I still remember some local incident this last Thanksgiving about someone pepper spraying people in line at a Best buy for "door buster" specials. Crazy.

My understanding from talking to the guys at Provisions is that they store very little beer there, in the basement it is mostly storage for Reserve Society allocations. The archives are stored offsite. Likely they only moved so many cases from the warehouse to the store and once it was gone it was gone, they couldn't pull any from the back because they didn't have any back there.

there's a difference between sold out and out of stock. If you had some off site they could have asked for their name and a deposit and tell them to come back in a couple days and pick up their bottle since they showed the dedication to wait in line.

but I guess with archive releases you can sell it for more than it cost originally and quickly increase your profit margins.

Their vintage beers take up space at a facility where they pay rent. There is a business cost associated with every case of beer being stored. It is reasonable for them to recover that expense and make a profit on merchandise being stored.

Yeah, I get it, doesn't mean I agree with it, or like it either. Being a RS member myself for the last 3 years, I spend a small fortune there, so chip meet shoulder in my case. Their other beers help me forget about these small things though. :grinning:

Yeah I'm done with RS after this year. Before it seemed exclusive and gave you access to limited amounts of awesome beers but now the bottle limits are double what they were last year and could easily be shared. A lot of it goes on sale to the public anyway.

RS this year was kinda lame, very few events so far, most of the beers being widely available.. I have a feeling that they are going to release enough black tuesday to go around this year...

As an RS member, I can count on one hand the beers they make that I would stand in line for anymore.

I like RS first and foremost because the beer is really good for drinking, especially with friends.

I don't have to take off work to wait in line for beer, tickets, raffles or run from store to store trying to find what and where its on shelves (aside from the pickups from questionable Provisions staff, if they screw up, its never in your favor, much like medical billing). I like just clicking buttons on the computer and knowing my beer is 'reserved'. I like drinking beer way more than hunting for it.

Yeah, I've sat back and watched the snips taken at the Reserve Society, lack of exclusiveness, lack of great beers....... but I totally agree with you on the convenience and the fact they still crank out good beer (though the fact it's more readily available to the masses rubs some the wrong way). I have a fast paced life and I've got much better things to do than spend a significant part of a day in line or driving to pick up the latest and greatest thing. The hunt doesn't mean shit to me either just give me good beer.

You have to admit, it's an interesting business strategy to charge folks $300 for beers that 70-80% of which will find their way on to shelves at Provisions. Don't get me wrong it's super awesome of the Bruery to make them available. But, it's essentially making the RS Society a questionable value for any locals thinking to join next year.

    Successful > Interesting

While there is less rationalization for RS if you're local, I still think I would be a member if I qualified as local. Sure, I might hypothetically live 15 miles from the Bruery, but damn, it often takes an hour to get there, one way.

That'd be a pretty disappointing amount of time wasted on a round trip if I were local and bottles of what I was looking for weren't available. Driving round LA/Orange County sucks (and parking at Provisions) even when you're guaranteed to get your bottles.

That partly depends on how many of the potential allocations you buy. I just did some quick math and the 15% discount has saved me roughly $150 already. Admittedly, I max out the majority of my allocations so my discount skews higher, but if you buy enough beer, the discount on Bruery beers you buy through the RS and at Provisions can pay for the membership.

The rarity factor really doesn't matter to me, I love the convenience of being able to order everything online and pick it up when I make it up there. If you're in the RS for trade bait, I can see how the appeal would be reduced, but the Bruery made no secret of the fact that they're trying to increase production on their sought after beers. I just want to be able to purchase beers that I and my friends enjoy, with a minimum of hassle - in that regard, the RS is worth every cent.
