UPS doesn't come until around 4-6 usually. If it wasn't a million degrees outside, I'd sit out front and wait for it!

Don't wait too long on your Enjoy By. I've already had 2 since I picked some up last week. Fresh is good! Also try the Go to ipa. Great session ipa. Awesome aroma.

Look, there are tons of great IPAs out there, but what matters are what you have access to. With that in mind:

SN Torpedo, and Hoptimum (in season). Torpedo is a must. It's an easy fridge-stocker.

    Bell's Two Hearted and Hopslam.

Stone Enjoy By, when it comes out.

La Cumbre makes some excellent stuff!

Check out seekabrew.com to see your local distro. Your state gets great distro; your local experience may vary. If you get Union Jack (and Double Jack), that's some solid stuff.

I see tons of good recommendations in this thread, and can do nothing but agree.

I like "west coast" style IPAs and therefore find two bells too mild, and East Coast IPAs too heavy. If you like Biting, Hoppy IPAs of the West Coast persuasion, these are the top 60 IPAs of the 600 I have samples over the years.

I would welcome suggestions from others who enjoy a similar subset of IPAs.

Wait, two hearted is too mild? And it's def more west coast style than anything else. It's a single hopped ale and one of the best singles there is. It's all centennial hops, which most things on your west coast list have in them. Not sure what you're talking about here but 2 hearted lays more than 3/4 of your list to bed.

How is a Black IPA different then a regular IPA?

I had the Enjoy by and it was really really good. Last night I had the Go To IPA and for me it was so-so. Maybe because I've had some great IPAs in the last week and that one didn't compare. I like Stone IPA better. The Swami would make a great 'go to' IPA if I lived in Cali.

Bingo! Session IPAs taste watered down to me.

If I want a 'light tasting IPA with flavor', I'll have a Swamis or Freshly Squeezed.

I like Go to for what it is. The price point is a little too high for a session though. They definitely hit the nail on the head with the aroma though.

Black ipas use darker malts and you can really pick up a roasted flavor. Wookey Jack, Sublimely Self Righteous and Nighttime are three outstanding examples.

Just had an Odell pearle white ipa. Its subtle, but pretty damned tasty. It comes in the mixed 12 thesy have out right now, bonus that it comes with St. Lupulin and IPA.
    Cheers!

I really like these three, too. I think of Black IPA's as tasting "green" and citrusy first, with a rich, slightly roasty finish from the dark malts. I find that many black IPAs are extremely drinkable, especially since most I've tried are 8-10%. They don't seem to taste nearly as dry to me as a regular IPA/IIPA.

One thing I think is worth mentioning is that while a 2mo. old regular IPA usually tastes pretty much the same as it was very fresh, just weaker aroma/flavor, I find that black IPA's can taste pretty different. Seem to lose all IPA aroma/flavor and taste similar to a porter with little roast. So I really try to make sure they're fresh, especially since many are $10/4 or more.
