I didn't read all the previous posts, but one of these was opened a few months ago at a tasting I went too. Some of us were aware there has been previous reports of infection. I person had a very strong suspision of a young pediococcus infection. Very present diaceytl with slight lactic tartness. Then again, others perceived it as a pleasant butterscotch aroma and a surprisingly delightful dark fruit tang. To each their own I suppose.

Haha that is marvelous, and true. I have stayed away from reviews, but if I was reviewing our bottle of BA Yeti, it would not be scoring very high.

Opened my bottle #1910 and tasted wonderful.

Was a bit thrown off thinking it was infected at the first sniff off the bottle, but once poured and tasted all was good.

Which is 14 bottles away from the review on first page, go figure.

Don't laugh I know someone wo was hospitalized for sending emails from a computer that had a virus. This stuff is highly contagious and should be avoided at all costs. I have a special quarantined area for all potentially infected beers. I usually gift them to my enemies as it isn't worth the risk. That 09 abyss I tasted messed me up BAD.

Had my second bottle of this tonight and it was damn tasty. My record has improved to 1-1. Keeping my old review until GD pays me for the first mess I drank.

This has no correlation with the oak, espresso, or chocolate aged yetis, right? I was thinking about trying those out.

It is the Oak Aged Yeti (base beer for the choc/espresso) aged in Bourbon Barrels.

Opened a bottle in the high 1300's (1387 I think) a couple weeks back and it was horribly infected. Sour and gross rotting vegetables.

I just opened one in the 400s last weekend and it was definitely infected as well. So my first one wasn't and the two after were. Total bummer.

I then opened my last '08 and it was a beautiful thing.

I haven't been very active on BA lately, but just happened across this thread. I picked up 4 bottles at the brewery in October, opened 2 in early November - #0264 and 0269 - and both were horribly infected. I exchanged a couple of emails with Jaroed and he said he'd look into it, but that none of the samples he had on hand were displaying signs of infection. I realize that a brewery can't act entirely on anecdotal evidence, but they've been receiving reports about it for 6 months now and apparently still have yet to make any sort of public announcement. I enjoy GD's beers and will continue to enjoy their non-BA offerings, but it seems like they've mishandled this infection issue.

Well after just finding out of the BA Yeti infection issues, I just opened bottle # 1216, and it is totally infected for sure. It seems like the bottles are hit or miss, but the bad thing about it is that I am still sitting on a few more bottles. :slight_frown:

    drain pour...

Pretty damn disappointed to see this thread still going with no clear response from Great Divide... I really enjoyed the '11 BA Yeti I opened in late November, but it was still early, and maybe I lucked out with a good bottle. I've enjoyed a variety of their beers, and had a great impression of the brewery after my wife and I toured it in '09. The BA Yeti infection appears to be an isolated issue affecting a portion of the 2011 batch. Based on principle, though, I'll probably think twice before going after any of their offerings until they come forward and address this problem.

Those of you that have had an infected BA yeti, email GD. I did so and they offered me a 2012 BA Old Ruffian as a replacement. Just because they haven't made an official announcement doesn't mean they aren't resolving the problem.

    I love Great Divide!

since no one answered this directly, no, there is no correlation between infected BA yeti and the oak, espresso, chocolate variations.

the infection almost certainly comes from the porous bourbon barrels that they aged BA yeti in. sanitation with the other varieties is considerably more reliable. you could probably drink every bottle of the (for example) espresso yeti batch and you would never find any sign of infection.
