Damn near anything with tons of hype. It seems like nothing ever meets my expectations the first time I try a beer with massive hype.

The plus is that I get to really enjoy it the second time I have it. Almost always, my opinion changes, and I end up really enjoying it.

Were you expecting a revolutionary beer? I think many people get it just for the hype and have no idea what to expect as far as the fact that what makes it special is not that it pushes any boundaries but how well it is executed. Kinda like a very rare version of old rasputin.

Im over the KTG hype. I just want to try it. Im sure it doesnt suck, but I would just be grateful to taste it.

They were/are known for having QC issues so maybe you had an infected one? I don't remember detecting any hint, however slight of fruit.

These days with all the friggin' hype, I don't know how some brews can avoid being disappointments. If they aren't the best thing one has ever drank or will drink it's a disappointment, or frankly sparks one of the greatest experiences of one's life then it's a disappointment. Solid well-executed beer are what impress me. That's why beers like Old Rasputin are the most impressive. Still stands its ground as one of the best classic RIS around.

That being said a mix of innovation and classic styles also has it's place-look at what FFF, Bell's, Founders, the Bruery or Cigar City does to name a few off the top of my head. Truly remarkable.

This is definitely a quality beer, but without the notable name it would definitely be overlooked. I mean, Odin's Tipple and many others completely blow this beer away but get little acclaim. Actually, that beer blows away most non-barrel aged Imperial Stouts.

I'll have to go with Mean Old Tom by Maine Beer Company. The other 3 beers I had by them scored in the top 10 of their respective styles for me, easily. Then they release a stout aged on Vanilla beans, helllllll yes. I drove an hour away and bought every Mean Old Tom off the shelf at the store I went to.

I liked the beer. that was all. Every other beer by them I was blown away, this one left me underwhelmed a bit.

really. I mean, this is by no means the BEST DIPA out there, but it is definitely over-the-top hoppy when fresh, and actually under-hyped, I think because of its availability.

For all of the hype and the money it cost me to trade for this, I would say '11 Darkness has to be it for me too.

Bourbon County Brand Stout, I loved Night stalker, the bourbon is just too overwhelming for me.

I was expecting more than a normal stout when I made my first waleish trade in 2007. Lesson learned...

I like experimentation and pushing the envelope ( and still do ). Normal, subtle, etc. beers bore me. I know some think I do the hobby wrong, but I enjoy what I drink.

I would have been much happier just to have gotten a pour of it somewhere.

I know it's been mentioned before, but I had such high hopes for Victory's Storm King. Turned out to be a drain pour though. Also, Golden Monkey didn't do all that much for me.

I struggle to really get into Southern Tier's big beers and most of Hoppin' Frog's stuff as well. Most of them are not bad beers by any means, but I think the huge number of ridiculously high reviews I saw for all of them led me to have unreasonable expectations.

Haha yea most people that are actually objective and don't just say its amazing because its rare will be disappointed if they're expecting the wrong thing. Many people trade much better beers for it too so then they're extremely disappointed when they don't think its half as good as the beers they gave up because its a normal stout.

I like that too, there's nothing wrong with it. Just saying KTG is about expectations and if normal bores you and you just trade for it because it's rare, you will be disappointed.

I agree, they should just make more and distribute it in kegs or something but that'll never happen/.
