Yes, nothing will be priced as well as New Glarus. I was happy that they were not in bombers or I would have passed up a nice Farmhouse ale.

Sorry the Yokel wasn't like you remembered it. Hopefully the WI Brewing Co. Saison and Door Co. Farmhouse Ales will be much better!

Had my yokel tonight. Is it just me, or was the last release more cloudy? I still love it as a summer beer, going to crack my second one before I comment more.

After my 2nd Yokel, I do think it is slightly different than my memory of it. Much less cloudy, maybe a bit thinner taste, not sure, just a bit less "great". I'm still going to drink the crap out of it this summer, and I still think it is an excellent brew.

That's exactly what I tried to express in my review; it's not a bad drinker at all, just sort of disappointing compared to the hype and anticipation. And I think you're right, when it had more residuals (more like a true Zwickelbier) it had something more to it.

I would still rate it very high however, much higher than your review (like a 4.25). There is something in the flavor I really like, I almost get a bit of Kolsch to it at times but sweeter and less delicate. Back a few years when this was out and I was buying it by a case in summer, I rated it as probably my favorite summer brew and gave it a 4.75. I still find it excellent but just missing a bit that put it over the top.

I believe you’re touched on the fact that New Glarus could release bottle cow trough water and people would fall all over themselves in an effort to proclaim it the best water they’ve ever had.

Don’t get me wrong, I love their beer – I have an absurd amount of it in my cellar, but much like some other brewers, the unending hype often far exceeds the reality.

I'll bet they release this on GToM weekend as an R&D, and then possibly as a Thumbprint later in the year. This is pure speculation on my part.

I don't necessarily subscribe to that opinion because I really like a lot of their beers, top and bottom fermented. I just calls 'em likes I sees 'em.

@MooseBoose -- what did you think of last year's re-release of Edel Pils? While I didn't think it was very Pils-like, I thought it was a good Helles style beer and full of more character than the Yokel.

I'm also no big fan of Totally Naked and find the Yokel pretty similar -- maybe somewhere between the TN and the EP.

OTOH… Hometown Blonde and Two Women are favorites.

Yeah that guy on the left lead my tour. He was really cool and answered a lot of great questions.

How is Wisconsin Brewing doing with seasonals/one-offs? I visited them shortly after they opened. I thought their beers were ok, but closer to bland/indistinguishable than they were to memorable. I definitely felt like the bottle/packaging was vanilla and clearly targeting Wisco's large cross-over demographic. I thought they were a small step up from Capitol.

Everything I've had from them has been very good -- nothing I would call "bland," but I'm not one who searches out the hoppiest, strongest head-banger beers.

Kirby's (the brewmaster) new Maibock, the only real seasonal from them so far, was about the best I've tasted in a long time. The Amber Lager was just as advertised and I thought the Porter was a good take on the style. I'm looking forward to trying that new summer seasonal Saison.

    Steve:

I love Two Women and Hometown Blonde. I think I scored 2 Women slightly higher but if we would have scored by tenths they would have been real close.

I thought Edel Pils was good. I did not like it as much as 2W or Hometown, but it was good.

I had to look what I scored Totally Naked because even though it is in my fridge half the year (my wife's favorite beer), I probably haven't had one in 2 years. I gave it a 3.75. Maybe I will have a little taste test one of these nights with Yokel a TN.

I don't remember the old Yokel being very similar to 2W, HTB, or EP. I remember a darn sweet, cloudy, yummy beer that was my favorite on a hot summer day. Sweeter and more "bready" than the typical macro. Still lighter, but without the crappy macro aftertaste. The two I had last night were clear as a pilsner and seemed a bit more sharply carbonated than I remember. Is it my memory or a beer difference? Or a bit of both? I'm not sure. I plan to drink a few more 6 packs over the summer before I revise my old score too soon.

I didn't really like Wisconsin's Big Sweet Life that much either though. I thought it was strangely buttery. I think I gave it a 3.75, but about a week after I had a 6er of Hofbrau Maibock, and wanted to go back and lower my Big Sweet Life score. Forget how good the Hofbrau was!

In the New Glarus R&D there are pics of a sour blonde ale that will be the R&D.

Hmm, either you're hyper-sensitive to that sort of character or something was seriously wrong with your bottle(s). There was none of it in the case-and-a-half (yeah, I liked it that much) I enjoyed over the spring.

Well, as has been discussed in other threads, the H-B Maibock is very different from most Maibocks you can find. I think it's closer to an Okto-Märzen than a Maibock. Given the choice between the two, I'd take… both! :grinning:

Hmmmm... was there any beer trading allowed in line last year? I've got a few BA Speedways to unload.

You may be right, as Marzens are one of my favorite styles, and I prefer them over most maibocks.

I still have one of the 6 pack of Big Sweet Life if you want it. I did have some Ayinger Maibock on tap in Madison and thought it was really good but still prefered the Hofbrau. Actually, that same weekend we went to Great Dane brewpub downtown and I had some of their Maibock which I thought was fantastic.

Doesn't the brewmaster at Great Dane and WB's brewmaster, Kirby, collaborate on beers? Like the Maibock?
(actually, I have no evidence on the Maibock, but I know they collaborate).

I meant to tell you to look for Sprecher's and the new Hacker Pschorr (Hubertus) Maibocks, but since you don't really prefer them...

I thought the Hubertus was decent but I had it right after a bottle of Westmalle Dubbel so it may have just paled in comparison.

When I was in college I preferred super models to average 2 am barflys too, but super models aren't always available....

I haven't had the Sprecher. I will keep my eye open. I did have the Summit Maibock, it was OK but not great.
