Hot box a sampling of bottles at 90* for a couple weeks - if the Lacto cell count grows, it's alive. I realize that's an oversimplification, but it seems like they should have an educated guess one way or the other. Being unwilling to say one way or the other, I could understand, but having no idea is a bit odd.

I believe you have a different definition of "hot box" than I do, since I would I figure everything in a hot box would move more slowly

Anyone receive any word on a delay for the Q2 PS allocation?

When they say "we will be halting any future allocation pickups or future sales." and "We will not be fulfilling any pending orders for Couverteur.", that leads me to believe that Couverteur will not be part of the Q2 PS allocation. Although, I have not received an email from the The Bruery to confirm this yet.

I'm planning on going to The Bruery tomorrow. Hopefully they will weigh in here or send an email to PS members before than. If not, I'll ask what the impact will be on PS members, while I'm there.

Thanks! Perhaps you can offer some suggestions of a suitable replacement to them as well.

Shit. That's a big bummer not to receive Couverteur. Heard great things on tap -- and a very isolated number of issues in bottles. Curious what they're replacing it with -- and hope we get a non-infected version later on in the year.

They'll re-label it and sell it as a sour for next year

I went to The Bruery Saturday afternoon to pick up my bottle of Floyd D’Rue.

I asked them how the recall of Couverteur was going to impact Preservation Society members. I was told that they will be replacing Couverteur in the 2nd Quarter allocation, but have not decided what the replacement will be yet. When they do, they will send Preservation Society members an email.

Couverteur was still available on draft, which I also asked about. They said the contamination only affected the bottles. I tried it and found the draft version to have no sign of contamination.

That's good to hear. Think I'd rather have a replacement bottle in the allocation rather than some sort of refund.

Bourbon Barrel Smoking Wood is the replacement beer per email

Really? That's hilarious if so. (Sorry PS Members)

I guess it depends on which side of the Smoking Wood fence you fall.

I’m quite pleased to be getting a bottle of Bourbon Barrel Smoking Wood.

In fact, I prefer it to Couverteur.

So for me, the second quarter allocation just got better.

I'd prefer to get a beer that may be a drainpour (Couverteur), rather than a beer I'm positive will be one (Bourbon Smoking Wood).

Yeah -- got that email this afternoon and was NOT at all thrilled. Much bigger fan of the sours and lighter Belgian styles than the barrel-aged stuff, so getting a second barrel-aged option (and one that I've seen universally disliked) is a total bummer.

Regardless of if you like/dislike Smoking Wood, it's hilarious to me (as somebody not in PS) that they are clearly continuing to dump as much of it as they can. And unfortunately giving a very well establish polarizing beer in a PS allocation (consisting of three bottles) seems to be one of the largest "dump it" moves and pretty unapologetic to the PS members.

    The current ratings are:
Smoking Wood, Rye Barrel Aged, 90 – Outstanding, 580 ratings
Smoking Wood, Bourbon Barrel Aged, 89 – Very Good, 242 ratings

I don’t think “universally disliked” is fair.

However, this is a very divisive beer. Those that dislike it, really hate it.

But the numbers seems to indicate more people like it, than dislike it.

Yeah, the "pDev: 13.28%" shows exactly how polarizing it is.

I'll agree -- "universally disliked" doesn't necessarily tell the full story. But can't get behind this as the replacement. I'll take it over nothing. But like I said, this is a bummer for those who aren't huge fans of the heftier barrel-aged stuff.
