I don't think of the Off Color version as a "traditional" gose, but it is a fantastic beer! It's a must have beer for anyone in the Chicagoland area.

What besides coriander and salt makes these two styles different?

I agree its not a traditional example at all, way too sour, frankly more sour than any Berliner Ive had either.

Trust me it will be worth the journey. Just don't show up on a Friday or Saturday late afternoon or evening. It is packed, although with that being said they are usually busy from open to close no matter what. They need a bigger place or a second place for sure. Cheers and if you make it drop me a line about your experience!

And please, before you say negative things about Westbrook Gose, just read the can. "This is our interpretation of Gose (pronounced "goes-uh"), a traditional German-style wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback." If anything they made it more palate friendly by using less salt than the traditional style.

Damn homie, you coming off as overly aggressive on a number of posts in here. I don't think there's a single negative comment in this thread.

Go drink a gose and blow off some steam.

How so? The only one I can see anyone would get offened about is when I corrected the guy's spelling. That's it. Sorry if I'm coming off as "overly aggressive" wasn't trying to be. My bad bro. It is internet and different people will interpret/take things differently. I am drinking btw, see WBAYDN thread. Cheers!

Typically gose has a lil higher ABV than the weisse (but not by much). also a lil higher malted wheat grain bill as well. both get that hit of post boil lacto, which give them their sour flavors.

but sharpness from salt and spice from the coriander is really what sets them apart stylistically.

german beer history and the reinheitsgebot is pretty fascinating, give it a google search to learn more about the genesis and evolution of german beer styles.

    happy drinking!

You gotta track down Rapp Gose. Not canned. Sometimes bottled. Very often available in growlers.

In Germany, Gose is still pretty much related to the German Democratic Republic (DDR). Anyway, there are new interpetations of this somehow dead german-beer-style, mainly by Freigeist Bierkultur from Cologne. They mix up the beer with spruce needles or use old Prussia recipes, basically they go wild when it comes to Gose

I bought a 12 pack of Anderson Valley the other day and it's going fast. I really like it but it's more sour than lost nations which is a little more salty and thirst quenching. I slightly prefer lost nations. Both are great IMO. Just stay away from the widmer bros mess. That Marion berry hibiscus gose is nothing like a gose should be and it's not very good tasting either. I'm still trying to go south to get some Westbrook.

There is no such thing as "too sour," stylistically speaking, for gose or berliner weisse for that matter, only personal taste.

If you get to Vermont you would want to go with the Lost Nation Gose, it is excellent.

My question is how long this beer keeps. Is it a beer you should drink within 3 months? Or will it still be good in a year?

Destihl is definitely my neck of the woods. Their Hoperation Overload is a mighty tasty DIPA. I will most certainly look for their gose. Thanks!

Best article on Gose I've read so far (won't copy/paste on my phone), but is BYO's Gose article. Just google.

Sam, have you tasted Westbrook Gose? If so, what is your opinion on whether this beer is stylistically correct?

    Cheers!

I agree with the folks in this thread who have mentioned it prior. If you have access to Shelton Bros distribution, you probably have access to this gem. Ritterguts is not only the best named beer in existence, it's also the gose standard bearer in my humble opinion.
