Just received a growler today; was worried about it too. First one. The box was wet on the outside when I got it, so more worried. Opened the wet box up and started taking the stuff out, one by one. Got to a can that was punctured and half the beer was out of it, things were looking up. Then I got to the growler that @Keiferfillinger packed like a champ (with electrical tape included, mind you:wink:). No leakage at all. So it was the dumb ass Fedex guy who popped a hole into the box and then into a can that caused the leak. Not the growler. So short story long, I will try to ship a growler no problem!

I am eagerly awaiting the results of this. I have more caps than I know what to do with and plenty of star san, I would absolutely take some caps, in some solution, to the filling station and cap them within 5 minutes of them being filled. If this works well, frankly I'd do it every time even if I'm going to drink it myself.

I have 4 going out tomorrow. I had them filled, kept in a cooler on ice for the 1.5hr ride home, then popped them and immediately capped with sanitized caps. We shall see how they survive the heat and the trip.

Soooo, looks like many more of those who responded trade growlers than never do, very few folks have had problems with low carbonation, very few folks have had leakage that ruined the beer (though it appears there has been some leakage noticed). This points to growlers being something beer traders shouldn't be afraid to send or receive.

So many of us today get such great bottle distro it is likely many of us can get beers others can also get. And in today's fine beer world there are so many great beers that are draft only that it just makes sense to try and send/receive growlers.

I've traded growlers before, but I really don't like to, and doubt I will again. Especially the smaller 16/32 oz jugs the glass is really thin I've has one break. And I pack like a fiend. If I was going to ship a growler it would have to be a 64, those are sturdy enough to stand some tossing.

I sent a half growler for a BIF. ...first time shipping one. I used channellocks to tighten the lid. Put it in a 2 day flat rate USPS (was going from PA to Texas) so the half growler was on it side....It was double zip locked and garbaged bagged...well I must have tightened it so tight I busted the threads and it leaked out. Needless to say. The growler spilled out but because of the zip lock and garbage bag, the package was fine. I resent the growler but just tightened it by hand and second time around everything was fine.
