Hey guys, I'm moving to Indiana (Bloomington) in a month from Virginia (Richmond). I was wondering if there are good brews sold in Indiana that you can't get in VA. I can think of Three Floyds, which I can't wait to try, and some of the more eclectic Goose Islands (I've tried their main beers and Belgians and gave them mixed reviews). Any suggestions?
All things FFF & BCBS Variants & can't forget Half Acre brews. Cheers!! Best wishes on the new lifestyle.
Half acre isn't distributed here. Seekabrew.com can tell you distribution differences. Fat heads, daredevil, Upland (original brewpub is in Bloomington), flat 12, sun king, carsons, quaff on, thirsty dog, I'm sure there are others
I like Triton's stuff, and Cutters kills. Chapman's is off to a good start, and Tin Man has made some excellent stuff lately to make up for their shaky start. I believe Function Brewing is in Bloomington, heard they're great! I'm also from Indiana, born and raised, though thank god I'm at least up north now.
Check out the Indiana On Tap page - http://www.indianaontap.com/ Tons of info on Indiana breweries. This is just my opinion, but the only world class brewery in Indiana is 3 Floyds. It will be about a 4 hour drive for you. I'v had a lot of 3 Floyds beers and love about 50% of them. In my opinion, when a brewery can bat .500, that is amazing. I would say most of the other breweries in Indiana bat at .200 or below.
Bloomington is about 45 minutes south of Indy. Bloomington has Upland, and a couple good beer bars like Yogi's. If you make the trip up to Indy, you can hit Sun King, Triton, Flat12, Tow Yard (I've been unimpressed), Bier, Indiana City (also kinda meh), Black Acre (which I like), and Outliers/Brugge (which I love). As for distribution, you'll see some Three Floyds, though Zombie Dust and Gumballhead are rare down here. Some of their more standard 6 packs are easy enough to find though, like Pride & Joy and Robert the Bruce. Their bombers see decent distribution too.
