I am in Massachusetts, and have a friend visiting this summer from San Diego. What should I ask him to bring in his luggage? Is Pliny the Elder an easy get there? Obviously looking for stuff I can't get (so not Stone, Lagunitas, Coronado, Green Flash). This guy is not a BA by any means, need stuff he can grab at BevMo. Open to suggestions.

Any Alpine IPA for sure. Plus, if he can get his hands on a Blind Pig, I personally liked that as much as Pliny... Maybe even more... :-0
Might take a little bit more luck to find any of those, tho. :-)

Thanks, looks like Alpine Nelson is on the list. Not sure what to ask for from Deschutes, Fresh Squeezed? Black Butte?
I'll ask him for Pliny, but don't know if he can find it easily, is Blind Pig easier to find? Most of this stuff wasn't around back when I lived in CA. Need to be selective, probably 2-3 bottles tops.

You're not going to get Alpine or RR at Bevmo.

Just go to the Bevmo site and do the pick up option to see what they have in stock. I'd probably just go with some Port and Modern Times cans. Easy for him to pack, not too expensive and they have been making good stuff.

I have gotten Modern Times cans that leak at top seam. I would be hesitant to put those in my luggage.

Try Sculpin cans instead. You can get those at Ralph's even.

We've got Sculpin cans here locally. In fact, We have 95% of what was shown on the BevMO site for in store pickup in SD. I'm amazed how solid our distribution of CA brews is. In fact, I may be better off having him bring Two Hearted...that we don't get.

Need to check for some local shops near him I guess, to improve chances. Where can you get something like Alpine, or stuff from the Bruery?

Alpine you pretty much need to go to the brewery. There is a bunch of bruery stuff at bevmo. If you know what city he is in we can point you to a good bottle shop in that area

What part of town is he going to be in? Will he have a car?

Sure he has a car (are there people in CA with no car?). He's in San Diego, but north. The office is off 5 north of UCSD. House is east of 15, somewhere between Mira Mesa and Poway (according to Google Maps).

So as far as bottle shops I would recommend K n B out by SDSU or Krisp which is downtown. Those will have more than enough selection if looking for Bruery,RR,other Cali beers in bottles. Highly recommend going out to Alpine for lunch and bottles. About the only way to get their bottles. About a 45-60 minute drive from Mira Mesa. Ballast Point is right there in Scripps Ranch for beer and their booze. Green Flash and Alesmith 10 minutes away too. Feel free to contact me if you need anymore recommendations.

Plaza liquor, right next door to BevMo in Mira Mesa (with a superb selection). Finding RR there is easy (although most of the time it is their sours, can ask for Pliney and Blind Pig though...they get shipments in on Wed & Fri).

Really sorry this happened to you. There have been a couple of times when small numbers of leaky cans have gotten into the wild, which really sucks. If you EVER buy a leaky can of our beer, we will gladly replace it if you bring it in to the tasting room, no questions asked. And if you really want to make the world a better place, email us at [email protected] with where you bought it and what the date is on the sticker. That way we can isolate the bad cans and swap them out.

We have a new canning line coming soon which should spell the end of this problem permanently.

    Cheers & thanks,

No questions asked huh? So if you find a keyhole in the side of a can I swear it was there when I bought it.

This was at a bottle shop on my way out of Cali, and I notified the store owner (who said he would talk to his rep). He pulled the ones that were obviously leaking off the shelf, but the 4-pack I got had very slow leakage in one, maybe two of the cans. It made a sticky mess all over the other beer I had, and I tossed it while cleaning up without writing down a batch number. I appreciate the response, but getting a replacement can isn't really an option when I live 400 miles away (plus I've run out of time to visit your brewery on my last two San Diego trips). Luckily, I'm not even mad, bro.

I hear you, and it's a huge bummer that that happened. We're working really hard to make sure leaky cans never get out. It's always worth it to email us, though. We'll do whatever we can to make it right.

    Cheers & thanks,

I haven't had an issue with Modern Times cans over the last few months. I had issues maybe 3 months ago, but nothing since. I'd trust them.

Good luck getting Swami's now. Allocation limits have hit.
