I had a couple pints on tap during a free Yelp event. No it's not a beer nerd beer, but it is drinkable and serviceable if just a simple lager is what you're looking for.

Fireman's #4 is real ale's number one seller. It is the beer that allows them to do all the other stuff, but I cannot imagine having to brew fireman's #4 every second or third batch.

I figured you would take umbrage with my use of the word "craft"

Nice Green Man snifter. Here is a blurry shot of my pint glass. Cheers!

Ok, so bud drinkers like firemans 4 as their gateway beer....not that they realize its their gateway

Im actually not suprised in this as i figured it was a big seller to people outside the "craft beer" industry when they cant get their bud, miller coors type beers. While still keeping us drinking it because real ale just rocks.

Could just be a lurker who never had a reason to post before and doesn't know how beers get added. It's not like he gave Maverick Lager a 5/5 review or started talking up this beer.

    Have you tried this beer?

Actually no. And given the plethora of other options in my area, I am not likely too either. But as stated before, it was never going to be a beer that I was actively seeking out.

If you had you may not have been as quick to defend it. I have tasted it several times and, IMO it's not good.

Opinions are like a-holes though, and I am one opinionated a-hole.

I like Fireman's 4, not just as an alternative to crappy beer lists. It is a great beer on cask, and always drink it when Hay Merchant, D&T, or Cottonwood have it on the cask engine. I guess it is not as hip as what the rest of you kids drink :grinning:

P.S. Rumor has it, their next beer out will be called Going Rogue. A light lager.

Not a Guns and Oil rep. After first taste, thought it was pretty bad, but couldn't find it to rate it.

I'm a friend of the owner of G&O. He's not a frat boy. But he's not a beer nerd, either. Just a good dude who wanted to start a beer business. I think the idea behind G&O was less Russian River and more Shiner Bock -- an approachable "local" beer for the Keystone/Heineken crowd to graduate to.

I've drank a lot of G&O because association, and it's an appropriate beer for sitting down to drink a six pack by yourself while watching sports and eating chips. And it's a small business alternative to the big company lagers. I do, though, find the "Guns and Oil Brewing Company" / Texas thing to be a bit deceiving being that it's contract brewed in New Mexico. But it's all about branding -- not beer. Someone has to do it, I guess.

Not worth talking shit on, though. Owner has said some silly things about beer, but he's one of my favorite people. And I drank a Stone RuinTen from a Guns & Oil glass this weekend. So it does some good.

My brother-in-law was in town over the holidays and bought a 6 of this because he liked the name. Would I be buying it again?.... no. Did I hate it?.... no. Will they sell a lot of it to non-serious beer drinkers?.... probably. As far as contract brewing goes; I'm sure if a local brewery had the capacity and/or pricing the business would have stayed local. A smallish outfit you may have heard of called Boston Brewing started that way. They claim their downtown brewery is opening in May 2015.

I've had it. I see it as the old "Pig's Eye" made in MN. It's OK. I don't think every brewery has to push the envelope. I'd buy it over Bud if that's all the ballpark had.

    Haters gonna hate, I suppose.
