I have purchased infected beer, The last time I did I called the store , the guy fortunately is pretty nice and I first explained I frequent your store quite a bit, Im the guy Who Bought the last of the kbs you had:wink: and purchase quite a bit of craft beer from you and ...Proceeded with the rest. He said no problem just bring the rest of it back for something else equal to the purchase. fair enough. Your guy, I would have turned into joe pesci from casino,,put my beer to sleep i will put your brain to sleep! Cause im stupid, thats what I do. and he would have returned the beer:slight_smile: Be nice.

Hops flavor and aroma absolutely diminish with time and storage conditions.

I was at a spot today and excited to see Port Mongo on the shelf. Then I saw it was bottled on 7.2.2013. The bombers at this store just sit around forever. Sometimes that means finding gems, like Old/er Viscosity, Stone Vertical Epic, Double DBA, Bruery Old Ales. Other times, it means 6 month old Maine Beer Co. IPAs. I told the guy there about it and he said that "Yeah, we just don't sell a lot of that stuff very quickly." One of the problems I guess of being a craft beer godsend in an area not known for its craft beer community.

Diminish the character and brightness of the hops, but bitterness will remain, thus a presence of hops. No hop presence, I think not.

Very obviously you were fully aware that the diminishing of the character and brightness of the hops is what was meant by the OP. Be an Advocate, not a Snob.

Since you're in contact with them already, I would let the brewer know that you won't be buying any of their packaged beer in the future until they start dating.

As far as the larger issue of old stock at stores, it just comes with the territory. Old beer is all over the shelves all across the country. We just have to use our resources to avoid it.

The shop owner sounds like a d bag.

I had a similar situation happen at my local grocery store Roche Bros. I bought a Mayflower variety pack. brought it open and looked at the IPAs they where dated 8 months prior to when i acquired them. Brought them into the store and explained. No argument just needed a managers approval. Employee even said, "wow you taught me something new"! I went ahead and showed the manager several IPA bombers on the shelf that also were real old. After grocery shopping, I walked by the craft beer section and noticed the manager had a shopping cart full of all the old brews. He spotted me and thanked me again for pointing that out.

Had a similar situation with a local brewer's product. I went directly to the brewery's QC person and was treated very well. Don't bother with the store, in general, if there's a problem with the packaging.

Yesterday (after reading that article about the Firestone Walker press education session) my boss gave me a 9 month old Goose Island 12 pack sampler. They don't taste the way the brewers intended, but they're cold, refreshing, and alcoholic. and FREE!

Don't buy craft beer from a little beer/liquor store. Because they just sit there.

A lot of the time, the cases of pints and bombers are 12 bottles, with very few exceptions (sometimes less, sometimes more). Cases of pints and bombers should be 6 bottles, not 12. That way, you aren't seeing as many year old bombers on the shelf. Just my $.02 (which won't buy me any say in what brewers do).

To the OP, don't buy Finch's until they put a canned on date on the can. Not only do you not know how old the beer is in the can, but the odds are that it's been on the shelf for a while. Finch's does not sell.

Bells is the absolute best at customer service, if you have any sort of issue with their beer they will send you a hell of a care package. When I had an off batch of Two Hearted they sent me two pint glasses, a metal bottle opener, and a ton of coasters. Great way to build brand loyalty.

Don't buy craft beer from a big beer/liquor store, since the increased amount of stock leads to lower individual brand turnover.

See, two can play at this game.
