Am I crazy or is this a crazy thing to do? I mean, it tells you when to drink it by on the label. Yet, when browsing the beer list at Gramercy Tavern in NYC, I noticed they have a 2012 vintage of it.

Now, GT is a pretty damn good restaurant and you can tell from the rest of their list and menu that they generally know what they're doing. But...WTF, right? Has anyone tried this or something similar? Does GT know something I don't or is this just a restaurant getting too "fancy" for its own good?

    WHAT IS THIS MADNESS

I can't imagine that will still taste good. Not sure what they're thinking.

It seems like their list is built for rich folks more so than beer snobs anyway.

Ha ha ha, wow. I saw a store in AZ that had 02.15.13 on the shelf next to the current iteration because it was the owner's favorite version.

Seriously. I thought Stone doesn't like when stores still sells enjoy by after the date? Wonder if Stone knows!

But $20 for an old IPA that specifically says Enjoy By...that's lame.

You sure that's not the Vertical Epic 12/12/12?

He linked the menu and it definitely says Enjoy By there, so I'm guessing not. Maybe the person who chose what beers to cellar got Enjoy By and Epic mixed up and decided to cellar the former instead :stuck_out_tongue:.

I had a bottle of Enjoy By 12/21/12 a couple of months ago. Tasted great.

The beer doesn't go bad by the date on the bottle.

Could you explain what it was about it that made it great to you? I couldn't imagine this tasting good at all. I've had just the regular Stone IPA at 6 months and thought it was stale enough to where I drain poured it. Enjoy By at a year and a half just seems like it would be awful.

    You're opinion is now meaningless.

Sure, fair question. After some thought, I realized that I opened it at the end of last year so the bottle was about a year old. Still hoppy, good head retention and lacing. Regardless of age you could tell the beer was well-crafted. The finer points of the hop oils had faded from fresh but not all that much and it was still very tasty. It's excessively hopped to begin with which I'm sure helped preserve the flavor. I love Stone's regular IPA (a lot) but I think it's a more delicate beer than Enjoy By. Do what I did and try for yourself, buy a bottle, put it in your fridge, forget it's there, don't get around to drinking it for a year, and then crack it open one night. Cheers!
