Do year-around growler-filled beer trade $4$? I seem to see ISO:FTs for various HF and other growlers filled with IPAs asking for hard-to-obtain cellarable bottles. I am after 32oz growler of Mama Masala (as far as I know, it's a year-around & easy to obtain beer if you're in the area) and HF Abner (as far as I know, this also shouldn't be too extremely hard when it's available) What would it take to land something like this? Thanks in advance.
i really hope this doesn't turn into a thread where someone is trying to argue down the value of something they want. if people won't give you what you want for what you're offering, you're offering too little. think of it from your prospective trade partner's point of view. suppose you're uncomfortable giving up a bottle. someone argues with you, and points out how you "should" give up the bottle, because of "fairness". a) would this ever happen to you (it would never happen to me)? b) would you feel like a moron after being convinced to make the uncomfortable trade (N/A for me, because negotiations would be over the second the person i'm talking to starts trying to convince me that i'm "asking too much")? --- p.s. while these 2 statements look similar 1) "you should give me that beer for less," 2) "i won't give you as much as you're asking for that beer," they are emphatically different. if i were negotiating a larger trade, and i heard (1), that beer (if not the whole trade) is off the table. if i heard (2), i'd reconsider how much i was asking--if i really wanted X, Y, or Z from the person--but would probably just not trade the bottle b/c it simply "didn't work out" (which is no fault of either of ours).
It isn't about how often it is available for fills. It's about how often traders are willing to get fills.
It's nothing like that Although I do admit that I would love to obtain these growlers without having to giving up an arm and leg, my intention for this post was more as to trying to figure out "what would it take", rather than trying to lower or increase value of something or anything like that (not that I even have the power to pull off something like that) I see the FT:ISOs, but don't get to find out whether the trade goes through or not. Without the having the experience of trading for growler-filled beers, I wanted to know what they "typically" trade for. That's it. No ill-intention here (and in fact, it's quite the opposite - I wanted to offer up something worthwhile for both parties so I was just doing my due diligence).
I would bet a similar sized growler of something local and available only in draft should work. Boneyard offerings are starting to get some notice. I bet this one http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/23066/72750 might land you the growlers you're pursuing
I think I traded a Parabola or Abacus for a growler (64oz) of Masala Mama. Never traded for HF. Everything I've consumed from HF has been pretty good, but for whatever reason, $4$ is rare with the people who trade their stuff, so Ive had tepid interest in acquiring any that way. My brother even caught a guy on here lying about the price he paid at the HF brewery for the beers (i.e. even when its under the guise of $4$, it isn't).
I'll speak to Masala Mama. (1) It's available in only one place. So you're audience for seeking it out is limited to people who live in the Twin Cities. That limits the availability right away. (2) It's in growlers. I know people who will not, shall not, can not ship a growler. Period. (3) Time. Since it's in growlers, you want to make sure that you have a solid trade, & solid trader, before going & grabbing a growler. Not that most of us would mind getting stuck with a growler of God's Own Nectar, but I also know people who've had to eat one when they didn't want to (i.e. single guys living by themselves). That said, I don't think it's tough to trade for. I've probably sent out 10-15 growlers of the stuff over the years all over the country. Typically, I'll trade it for seasonal or semi-limited stuff. Here's a list of things I've traded it for in the past year (roughly, since all the trades were for multiple bottles). Parabola (multiple times) Box of Chocolate Hi-Fi Rye Kuhnhenn BBBW Firestone Walker XIV (when it was on shelves) Dark Lord Black Xantus You get the idea. Good beer for good beer & good luck.
I've been looking to land a growler of Masala Mama myself. Offered up some limited release CCB beers and didn't get a single bite. I thought I had a good chance with what I was offering, but I'm not surprised I didn't get any interest. Even though it's easy to obtain if you have access to it, the number of people who have access to it is small, the number of people who have access to it and are on BA is even smaller, the number of people with access, on BA and active on the trade forums smaller stiller, and the number with access, on BA, actively trading, and looking for something I'm offering even smaller (or I guess in my case non existent).
I agree with maximum12. To elaborate: Town Hall is less than a mile from me and I can walk in any day and grab one (except Sunday). However, I would much rather work out a deal shipping Surly cans if I am interested in someone's local, easily accessible beer of similar quality. Why? Because it's a pain the ass to ship growlers. I have had only one "shipping exception" and that was because of a growler of Mama. Also, friend of mine who has many many trades completed has a similar experience. Also, limited does not necessarily equal desirable. I would gladly trade Mama for Elder even though Elder is not limited (in certain parts anyway).
