I'll be in Southwest Virginia next week and was hoping for some advice on breweries, bars and bottle shops in the area. The closest metro areas (and I may be using the term "metro" somewhat loosely) are Mt. Airy, NC and Hillsville, VA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also open to setting up an IP Trade if that happens to be your neck of the woods. I have plenty of CCB goodness. Let me know--thanks!

The only place I am aware of is Skull Coast in Mt. Airy, NC - no personal experience but it is someplace I have been meaning to check out at some point in time.

I'm from that area and I spend a decent bit of time in Fancy Gap (nearish to Hillsville) as my parents have a house there. Any beer that is drunk in the area comes up with me from home. Skull Camp in Mt Airy is the only thing I know of.

@dbrauneis - Skull Coast is the brewery that was supposed to go in Hickory but ended up falling through (no idea where they ended up). The brewery in Mt Airy is Skull Camp. I assume they aren't related as I think Skull Camp has been at Round Peak Winery for a couple years now.

Mt. Airy is pretty barren when it comes to beer choices. You're better off being a "wino" in that area. Your best bet, if you want to make the haul, is to come to Stella Brew or City Bev in Winston. But call before you haul.....City Bev is cloing some days this week for vacation and SB closes on Mondays.

My bad - I meant Skull Camp but for some reason Skull Coast was what I typed.

Thanks the feedback so far, even if it's not very encouraging. Yelp pulls up a place called Creek Bottom Brews in Galax, VA. Worth a stop?

I'd call first. I'm in Galax and Wytheville quite often and Hadn't heard about them yet. According to their website they opened in January of 2013 but the site seems somewhat vague. They list nothing under beers and call themselves a "brewery" but on the same page make reference to being a craft beer store. Not sure what to think. I feel like you'll either have to head towards Bristol or towards the Roanoke/Charlottesville/Richmond area to find significant numbers of breweries and brewpubs. I think the closest would be The River Company in Radford and Bull and Bones in Blacksburg. There may be others I don't know about.

If you're coming to Mt Airy, Fancy Gap and Hillsville, your best bet is to stop in Charlotte along the way and stock up. It's on your route. Try Brawley's.

I -think- this is a place my parents have been to. If its the place I'm thinking of, they do have a couple of their own beers I think, but they are mostly a beer store.
