I was also wondering to what extent the ideas of this would be able to go considering realistically it's got to be ready in 5 months' time.

It would probably have helped if they had provided some parameters, but I guess they didn't want to discourage people's excitement.

FWIW, I suggested their sour blonde base with blackberries and vanilla beans - seems feasible from the standpoint of time (allocate a few barrels and fruit them within the next few weeks, bottle by Nov 1) and cost (fruited sours are in their $20 tier, seems reasonable), and might even taste halfway decent. Considering the sour side of things got the short end of the stick this year, I'd like to see the second pilot beer go in that direction.

This. I hope that once they do next year's sign ups we get a pilot competition in like Sept, so that they can brew in the mean time, BA for 9-12 months in 2015 and become an end of the year 2015 gift.

As for this round, I'd hope as a pilot measure they discourage blends of existing beers and use this as an experimental avenue. Good or bad, it will be a fun process and I submitted Bubblegum Sour. There are some great Belgian yeasts that produce a notable bubblegum flavor, so compound that with maybe a double strength (and 2x sour?) Hottenroth type recipe, add some bubblegum extract and it could be fun. Could even add a little vanilla bean to it to help bring out a little sweetness. I'd like to call it Bru-zooka Joe.

I submitted this as my Hoarder pilot beer suggestion.

I'm drinking Smoking Wood right now to celebrate. the bottle has a couple years on it and it's fairly smooth until the finish. I'm not in love with it but I don't really get all the hate.

I suggested a cantaloupe berliner (would have to be very dry and only light tart - not a sour bomb - to let the cantaloupe shine), a "fruit salad" saison with watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe, and honeydew, and (stealing from JWB) a pineapple kolsch. Can you tell I'm ready for the 4th? :grinning:

I like it too, but I think that for even those who enjoy SW it's more of a "once a year" type beer and the Bruery makes enough for it to be a "once a day" type beer.

I suggested a Nelson hopped IPA. Wishful thinking...

Yeah, I wonder if there will be any surprises to make this month more interesting.

Considering we're halfway through the year, we're about due for one of the mystery beers. This would be a good month for it since it might cause me to actually buy something.

According to the calendar, Mystery Beer #1 is due in September. Based on how this year is going, I don't think the Bruery releasing something ahead of schedule would give me warm fuzzy feelings.

I suggested a Strawberry-Basil Sour, "dry hopped" with mint, aged in gin barrels.

Based on that website for the old fashioned recipe they sent out, my guess is we'll be getting a bourbon barreled bitter with aromatic spices (to simulate bitters). I suspect 5 months aged.

This is why I voted for the sour piƱa colada.

Never understood the hate either. I love it. I could easily drink one a day if I had $18 a day to spend on beer.
