But they're so punk rock they don't want to make a beer that's too good otherwise too many people might like it then it will be mainstream. I think that's how it works.

I mean, or they could make a really good beer but continue putting them in taxidermed rodents, that'd keep it from being mainstream......

BCBS is over-the-top sweet, with an unnecessary abv. Mellows after 2-3 years, but who want to wait that long to drink a beer? And FFF has been churning ok "meh" pale ales (Space Station, Man O Awe, even Rich Life) alongside a few truly great beers- ZD, Alpha King (when I can find it fresh), APW, and Permanent Funeral.

As a former SD hop head, FFF is the most over-rated brewery in the USA. I'm in MKE and I'll probably never make the 5+ hour round-trip drive through Chicago traffic to go there. Would much rather visit Half Acre, Revolution & Pipeworks, or make the drive to Iowa for Toppling Goliath.

As Loganyoung stated, GI was left off as an obvious AB-Inbev snub. It has nothing to do with the fact they are so widely distributed (as others have stated), otherwise they would not have spent the entire Boston episode at BBC (Sam Adams), sitting in a bathtub with Jim Koch. But if you are going to argue they should be on there (and they should IMO from a pure beer quality standpoint), why compare how many beers they have in the top 50 to how many BrewDog has? Shouldn't you compare them to the other 5 Chicago Breweries that are on the list? And i guess it's because it is retired since, but King Henry was hands down the best barleywine i ever had, and nobody is even mentioning that was a GI beer.

Saw Sam Caligione in the trailer for season two, so it's a safe bet that there will be a DFH episode. Can't wait to see what they brew up! I predict a beer brewed with fish heads and dog treats.

I have never had a bad beer from either Revolution or Pipeworks and right now they are my favorite local breweries, even more so than 3F's. The mainstream stuff from Goose Island doesn't even come close so it makes sense not to mention them. For craft beer week in Chicago one bar had 25 different Pipework beers on tap.The lines to the bar to get a beer were 5 deep in the middle of a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't even St Patrick's day!!

Then again, some people in the craft beer community wouldn't consider what Sam Adams is doing as "craft." Tony Magee from Lagunitas doesn't.

I don't like calling out breweries, but I slightly agree for Sam Adam's meek and uninspired line of beers.

I personally support GI's decision with AB-Inbev. Production of BCBS has at least doubled and will continue to grow. The larger distribution, along with BCBS' price point, of one of the best beers in the world is hard to argue against.

Has anyone forgot that Goose Island hasnt been a "craft brewery" for years. Especially now that the are 100% AB. Most of their beers especially their core line up are no longer made in Chicago. I wouldve been surprised if they were mentioned.

Agreed -- not to mention that if they went to (mentioned, alluded to) the original Clybourn pub, they wouldn't have been supporting A-B as the pub wasn't part of the sale -- and still brews great beer.

I thought their top 5 of both breweries and beer bars were very good. I lived in Bridgeport and loved Maria's and Publican is my favorite spot in the city. All the breweries in the top 5 were places I frequent or with I could frequent more.

Sam Adams is meek and uninspired? All their high ABV beers leading up to Utopias (triple bock, millennium). They have also dabbled in some sours with the KMF blend they have though many aren't bottled. And all the long shot beers they do. I'm not saying all these are great beers but I wouldn't say they are uninspired and meek.
Just go look at their profile of beers on here. A lot out of the norm and experimental stuff

Agreed, Goose Island is simply too large now and "mainstream" if you will to be considered craft. I will agree though that yes, the BCBS series does destroy everything else in Chicago, but as others have already pointed out, many of the small time craft breweries are absolutely blowing up now (i.e. Pipeworks, Revolution, Half Acre, etc) and are definitely reshaping the scene.

Maybe good for you, but now that BCBS sees distro, I see that much less of it where it was born, right here in Chicago. It pains me to read about the "I saw BCBS on my local South Carolina liquor store shelf collecting dust" posts knowing I have to bite and claw to snag even a couple bottles here in the homeland.

I'm curious what you mean here, when you say "Especially now that..." that implies they weren't a "craft brewery" BEFORE the acquisition, and this confuses me.
