My little one will still be a little young for that.

    1) I'm not a design type guy. I'm a software developer/database/sysadmin type guy - my idea of making something visually appealing is putting it into tabular form.
    2) If you'll have cell service while you're here (which coming from Canada, I have no idea about), I would suggest making a custom Google Map with the stops on your itinerary. nanobrew's map is invaluable, but whenever i travel, I like to make a custom map so I have a quick view of just my points of interest, a well as quick links to their information and/or notes about hours/things to be aware of. If you want something in static form, only you can decide what information is actually valuable - carrying around every piece of data about all the places I listed would be complete overkill.

Yeah true. I was essentially saying that it should be made into a guidebook

I'm looking into cellular options, I feel like it would be useful to have access to Google Maps (i'm pretty lost without technology to be honest) as well as checking things on BA. Have seen some temporary US SIM cards that would save me a fortune over roaming charges.

Not that it's as handy as what xul created, but for those visiting, also might be worth picking this up:

    http://www.amazon.com/Beer-Lovers-Southern-California-Breweries/dp/0762792000#

Great read with maps, suggested crawls, notes on toll roads, etc.

In that same vein, Brandon Hernandez published an eBook guide to San Diego breweries. I haven't read it so I can't speak to its value, but Brandon is generally on top of brewery news around the county and I would expect it to be valuable for people who want a more in depth look at things.

I know it's possible to save parts of the map in Google Maps. I think you'd have to save it in several chunks and I'm not entirely sure if it'd work with the customer maps xul was talking about, but it still might be something to look into if you want to try going it without cell service. Wifi seems fairly ubiquitous at this point in time, so I feel it'd be entirely possible

Was thinking of either getting an unlocked phone here or just grabbing a cheap prepaid one from 7-Eleven.

i'm flying in this thursday morning and based on this thread and others, i've tried to put together an itinerary to maximize efficiency by hitting places in the same day that are relatively grouped together. is it bonkers for me to try and do Societe, Ballast Point (Old Grove), AleSmith and Green Flash on Thursday after flying cross-country?

Yes. I'd just pick 2 and see where it goes from there, unless you are really into ticking and limit yourself to a beer at each place.

I would skip out on Green Flash, and stick with the other three. I've only been to Green Flash twice, but they've never really had anything on tap that I was really impressed by. Societe, Ballast Point, and Alesmith always have some good stuff on tap that you wouldn't be able to try anywhere else. I would look into a taxi though, you don't want to be driving around after drinking that many great beers. I would do sampler flights, and then buy some bottles to go if available.

thanks for the advice @HeavySpeedway and @beerman4

i'll probably skip GF then, and stick to the other three on that day. my girlfriend will be with me so we'll kind of keep our drinking to a low roar (flights, splitting beers, etc) so we can make it through the day. i'm also working on an "Escondido" Day to visit Stone, LA/Port, Rip Current. might be this Friday. If anyone wants to meet up for a beer, let me know so we can try and plan something out!

Be careful at rip current. Lots of great beers with sneaky high abv. Gotten into some trouble there on a couple of occasions...

One can get into a lot of trouble at Alesmith too, but it's not sneaky. LOL

Hang on hang on....who said this is just for kids? A few bottles in and chalk and drawing can become an amazing adventure while you wait for the food trucks to show up and/or sober up because you were dumb and thought it would be a great idea to drive there and then forget you were the one who drove there.

Obviously you don't have the cute-vibe going on that I do.

Edit: Or maybe it was the $100+ tab I was still working on...either way...COLORS!!!

Highly recommend taking UberX. Plentiful in SD. Went from La Jolla to Societe (which is in KM).. a 20 minute ride for $23 dollars. Then it's just a quick $5-6 dollar fare from Societe to Ale Smith/Ballast Point. Much better option than a taxi.

Any recommendations for non-hopheads? My wife has just got into craft beer but hates IPAs. I love them but it would be great to try anywhere that caters for those that don't just love hops.

Stone is a given due to the sheer variety of their beer menus!

    Alesmith
    Ballast Point
    Lost Abbey
    Pizza Port
    Rip Current
    Belching Beaver
    Modern Times

Bar-wise, most of the good bars will have a diverse enough taplist that finding a good non-IPA to drink won't be difficult.
