Before AB bought Goose Island, Craft Brew(er)s Alliance owned 42% of the company.

Since CBA is about 1/3 owned by AB, the Brewers Association does not consider them "Craft". As a result, Goose Island then being more than 25% "...owned by an alcoholic beverage industry member that is not itself a craft brewer" also was not considered craft by the B.A.

When AB bought GI and took full ownership, they also purchased the 42% of GI owned by the CBA for $16.3 million.

Gotcha, I didn't know about the CBA ownership prior to the AB buyout. If you go by the numbers though, 1/3 of 42% ownership is only 14% was owned by AB during CBA's invested time, does that really rule them out? Seems a bit petty at that point.

That's not how the B.A. calculated it.
    • CBA was not a "craft brewer" because AB's minority share of CBA was over 25%.
    • "Non-craft" CBA owned 40% of GI - so GI was not a "craft brewer".
It was not based on AB's share of GI.

I saw some pictures somewhere of the guys driving a race car around Dover Speedway. I'm assuming it was from when they did a DFH episode.

I tried watching the first few brew dogs episodes and wanted to slit my wrists. That show is awful!!

Yes, I'm wondering how that's tied in with the beer they brew.

I havent seen the full episode yet but i was there for the filming. The beer was...interesting. It was extraordinarily vegetal in both aroma and flavor.

Even though Goose Island is mainstream, when they did Boston they used Sam Adams which is more mainstream. So I have no idea why they were not listed. I think they should have been.

Loved the episode. The beer they brewed looked horrendous but besides that this was enjoyable. I thought they represented Chicago beer well. FFF at 1 showed their hype is still around, Pipeworks is definitely Chicago's new baby, Piece has won some big awards lately. I thought they showcased good Chicago beers throughout the episode; Zombie Dust, Flywheel Lager, Anti-Hero. It was fun.

I'm unsure how a beer could be made (and such a high profile one) and not get a listing on any of the major ratings sites (here, RB, or Untappd). Yet that seems to be the case with this beer.

Granted, they didn't make much of it, but still... there appeared to be at least 75 people at the final tasting.

This show would be more entertaining if they just visited and drank with the local brewers/craft bars and cut-out the 10 minutes of air-time they waste trying to make a ridiculous beer in a space shuttle using magnets or 1000 miles under the sea. gtfo with that. We want to see the breweries, and learn about them. (At least I do)

Some of their promotional videos for this season show them in a swamp boat while a voiceover says they travel from "ice caves to on the bayou", so I'm assuming that will be the Alaska and New Orleans episodes. Also, there is a still of them standing on top of the bar drinking in the Golden Road brewing (Los Angeles) tap room. Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head is also easily recognizable, as is Robin Leach - a prominent Las Vegas resident. So, future locations will include Delaware, Louisiana, Alaska, Los Angeles, and next week's episode in Vegas.

This x1000. I'll watch the show if I see it while I'm channel surfing because I dig the local component of the show, but I don't make an effort to watch it on it's air date because the brewing segments are usually terrible.

There's also a Hawaii one. James was tweeting about filming there anyway.
Which I'm assuming will be at Maui brewing. Any other breweries there anybody knows of?

Lagunitas was not open yet, hence why they got no mention.

The way the show is edited plays a part of this, but the hosts are insufferable.

100% agreement. I was close to signing off on the first season, but they do enough of a good job with local scene that it keeps me watching. The first episode of this season was almost un-watchable because of the bald one...Not funny...

So Sam Adams was small enough to be their co-brewer last year but GI is too big? OK...

I don't want to hash out the exact argument that's been had a hundred times before, but "craft" is an extremely vague term, and it's boundaries change regularly.
