Ballast Point has begun using a "Best Before" date in the form XX###/#####. The first 2 letters refer to the beer (ex: BE=Big Eye), the next 3 numbers refer to batch number, the concluding 4 numbers are the best before date in the form of mmddy. this date is 6 months from bottling (6 month shelf life). yellow lettering on the neck/shoulder of the bottle

example: S029/08122 means Sculpin batch#29, best before August 12, 2012 (bottled on 2/12/12)

They have actual printed dates now such as " SC 132 Best By 071912".

    Hats off to Ballast!!!

    Dear Ballast Point...

I so do enjoy your rather fine brews that I partake in, but one fine sunny day I stumbled upon a fish label beer and while it's sporting figure cut a fine manly jib to my probiscus, I picked it up post haste...

Unfortunately to my demise the beer was unfortunately that of the expired variety, not unlike the fish I find on Mondays or the times I neglect to check labeling dates in a place that realy... oh heck I just forgot to look.

In my absence of gratitude and fondness and because of your philanthropic nature, I would so much like to have more Vanilla Porter sent to my door.

    or Sea Monster.

    or... just beer.

    beer that you make...

    ....

    the good stuff.

    signed...

    a Ballast Point fan.

    ...

can I get an opener at least? :flushed:

Thanks for this. I'll have to start looking. I'm studying my last Sculpin bomber which still sits in the recycle bin and I can't find any date stamp at all. It didn't taste super fresh. Good thing that I can get fresh Blind Pig so easily, because those dates are always present and easy to read/understand.

Guess it's kinda old but still pretty delicious

I have not seen that either here in CT but did score some Black Marlin at Yellow Front in New London recently.

normally only have lukewarm things to say about them (sculpin, sea monster, victory at sea, none really blew my skirt up, as they say). however, will take this positivity thread as a chance to say that i really enjoyed their barrel aged three sheets barley wine. had it on tap @ a bar in NYC (stag's head) a day or so after a ballast point event. enjoyed it even more than the curieux i had after.

Sea monster was actually the first Ballast Point brew that I had ever tried and they immediately won me over. Next up was Victory at Sea. I've had quite a few coffee porters and vanilla porters separately, but I thought the two bounced off each other rather well in Victory (there's a reason why it's rated as "World Class" on BA.)

BA Sea Monster's been done. I've gotten a growler of it, and it's delicious.

The Best By dates are 120 days from bottled date for beers under 10%, for anyone who cares to know when your beer was bottled.

Really? The fresh beer only site says 6 months (180 days) out.
The Sculpins at my local store just got 2 months fresher, and I'll have to pick them up soon!

Really, but this is for the bottles that say Best By and then a date. Not a code or anything. It has an actual date like 082412. Perhaps fresh beer only is accurate for their old bottle coding.

You're spot on. Even the real fresh stuff I got tasted unlike most pale ales I normally enjoy. Certainly different tasting.
