Why did you become an Advocate?

At the risk of being ridiculed for taking things too seriously, I'd like to pose this question as a way of getting to know this community a little better. Why do you care about beer? Do you work in the brewing industry? Did you originally join up to get answers to your homebrewing questions? Do you just really, really like beer? I'll go first.

I've been interested in trying new beers since I was able to shop for my own. At first, it was a quest to find 'my beer'. The beer that I could call my favorite and settle on. This evolved into a passive interest in always trying something new, and then eventually I got a job at a wholesaler - in the training process I learned a lot about beer, and a real interest developed. I hopped on beeradvocate.com one day just to educate myself regarding who knows what, and just sort of fell in. I came to the realization that brewing is an art form, and partaking is a cultural experience. I decided I really enjoyed the idea of tracking my beers, and discussing them with you guys. Been an active member ever since.

Because of the endless options and no other hobby gives me a buzz.

I didn’t really get into beer until the last couple years, I moved to Virginia right before my 21st birthday, before that I spent many nights in Canada slamming back mixed drinks as I hated beer ( I worked in a huge liquor/wine store for 2 years). When I moved I met a few people and they all drank beer, so by association I started drinking beer. I used to think it was cool to pick up the newest Leinenkugels release and whatnot. As I started to get more and more into beer I started to experiment more with my tastes. I mostly used this site at first just for beer reviews and I only drank a beer if it got 90+ ratings.

My friend who got me into beer started home brewing and I always vowed that I wouldn’t go down that road because I wanted to enjoy beer and not have it be a chore brewing beer. Well now all that has evolved to crazy proportions and I have a cellar with more beer than I know what to do with, and brew nonstop with him.

I wanted to keep track of all the beers I've tried for a reference at work, that and I really, really, really, like beer.

I'm not an advocate but I play one on TV.
For me, beer is a foodstuff that I like consuming and learning about above all other foodstuffs.

Beer has cultivated many friendships over the years. I have to say I would not have as many friends if it wasn't for this hobby. Honestly in my case, I don't advocate craft beer - many times (such as this past weekend) I'll get to know someone while I'm drinking Dirtwolf and he's drinking something as awful as Natural Light. I may even have a Natty Light for old time's sake.

Same! I would say that buy supporting craft with your dollars, you're an advocate. I don't think evangelism is an inherent aspect of advocacy. I usually just use the term to refer to all members of the forum.

I am fascinated and truly love the micro community, it plays a large roll in my life. I manage a liquor store that has a very large selection. I love knowing about all the different beers that come out on the market. There is no better way to know them to do research on all the products to discover new products. That is the reason why i am on this site.

I'll play...I used BA.com for years as a reference point for beers I was thinking about purchasing because the site would list the ABV and IBUs and it was always nice to see what other people (seemingly beer geeks) thought about it. I joined the forum after lurking for a while, reading some of the threads and then their was a question posed in the Mid-Atlantic forum that no one had answered so...I said fuck it and joined and answered the dude's question.

I was afraid to join because I knew I would spend more time discussing beer than I already did, and that's exactly what has happened. I'm a BA in "real life" on accident because I'm just a dude who likes to drink who happens to seek out exactly what he likes. No hobby for me.

I just like to show people that there is more to the beer world than Bud, Miller, or Coors. If they like it, awesome. If they don't, oh well, I tried.

    Y so srs bro???

Jk...jk. I joined because I randomly started getting curious about beer less than a year ago. I have somewhat of a calculated, perfectionist, value oriented personality type, and I tend to look for the best of something, then strike a balance between quality and price, thereby maximizing value. Primarily, I want to know how good something can actually be - the pinnacle of a product.

For instance, my last area of focus was coffee. I was drinking a stale old cup of Folgers and thought to myself "there has to be something better, why settle for this?" So I went to a local coffee roaster and got some primo beans, bought a nice bur grinder, bought a nice coffee maker (and an Aeropress to play with), did a lot of research and homework on coffee, and just went all in. Now I can make some really, really great coffee that makes me happy.

Finding better beer was almost an identical process, except it started with swigging on a Coors Light instead of Folgers, and didn't (or at least hasn't yet) ended with making my own beer. I can't afford to go down that rabbit hole just yet. My beer homework knowlege base of choice? Here we are!

I worked my way through college at a coffee shop, so I've been there as well. Good coffee is one of life's terrific pleasures.

Since my first sip of Falstaff from my dad's can I have liked the taste and smell of beer. After years of exploring beers, then leaving beer for wine and Scotch whisky, I finally returned to serious beer exploration a few years ago. My wife, a non-beer-drinker, had been encouraging me to get mixed 6-packs at the Rainbow liquors near our house to find one on which I could settle. What I found is that I enjoy the exploration itself, trying different brews, different styles, different tastes.

Late last fall I discovered BA and found both a resource on which I could draw and a community in which I felt welcome. I wasn't treated as a "Newb" despite having a low score at the beginning. The fact is that while I've rated and reviewed relatively few beers since joining, I've tried vast numbers more over the decades which, due to the passage of time, I feel no longer able to rate fairly. Except for Canadian Ace which would get 1's across the board for sheer wretchedness. Well, no, for appearance it would get a 2.5 as it at least looked okay when poured, but you get my drift.

I collect wine and post frequently on wine berserkers.com, started to drink more craft beer so this seemed like the next logical step to learn more
