Brown ales should concentrate on malt, IPA's on hops. This is why I think Arrogant Bastard fails (yeah, I know lots of guys are fans), the strong presence of hops gets overwhelmed by toasty, almost burnt, malt. It like it can't decide what it wants to be, but I guess that why the bastard is arrogant.

I like very malty brews and very hopped brews. It depends upon mood, beer availability, and how burned out my palate may be with one style over another.

As long as the packaging and/or brewer's web information is pretty straight forward as to whether they're aiming for a 'traditional' brown ale style or a 'new and improved' style, I'm good either way.

I don't like aromatic hops in brown ales at all, but I don't mind bitterness to be a touch above English examples.

AB uses a ton of chinook and only chinook. It's really spicy, woody, and not very citrusy at all. They have brewed a couple "AB dry hopped with ___", that I assume taste like the many red I's on the market today. For those craving that rich chinook bitterness by itself (as opposed to with centennial a la Stone IPA), there are very few other options. Cheers

Buy up all the Goose Island Nut Brown Ale before it's gone for good. Those guys at Goose Island got this one right. It's a brilliantly brewed brown.

This I agree with I hated Durty with a passion! The malts didn't accent the hops at all. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so.

Don't like hoppy brown ales. I don't remember Brooklyn Brown Ale being overly hopped up but its been years since I had it.

I like Brown Ales to be malty. If I want something hoppy, I'll drink an IPA.

I like Moose Drool, but if they hop it up, it ain't Moose Drool. Horizon Red Ale didn't do anything for me. When they added centennial hops to the mix and renamed it HR IPA (note the two extra initials) I loved that. Here's the honesty in labeling and the improvement from adding more hops. BTW - I love the Bastard.

Red Hook's not a favorite around here and deservedly so, but their Mudslinger Brown Ale is easy to find and isnt overly hoppy if thats what youre looking or.

Breweries that do not feel the need to hop the hell out of every style they brew are the ones that get my business on a regular basis.
They are not always easy to find, and that's sad.
