I'm moving into a house that has a bar in the basement complete with a kegerator. I'm pretty excited about it, and have been looking into what kind of access I have to my favorite beers that I can get in sixth barrels. I figure between myself and having a few friends over once or twice a month, it could probably get kicked in 2-3 months.

What style of beer do you guys usually keep in your kegerators? How long does it take you to go through the barrel? Does the 'freshness' factor usually considered for bottled beers use the same time frame as a keg?

6 home brew kegs....right now 2 saisons, 1 mild, one hoppy wheat, one IPA, and one blonde (for not beer nerds)...the longest a keg lasted was 6 months, IPAs usually last a few weeks for me. I usually give out a 64 oz growler to my homebrew buddy every keg.

I like to have a nice assortment for all my friends to try but always have a nice easy drinking beer like a blonde on for everyone to enjoy

With a few people tapping it on a semi-regular basis, I've gone through sixtels in a few weeks or a few months, depending on the beer. An easy drinking IPA like 60 Minute or HopDevil usually lasts me on average a month. I would say having people over regularly you probably won't last 3 months.

So you are in PA, what are your favorite beers? I can tell you pretty much what you can and can't find in sixtels. I usually keep an IPA and then something else on the other side (dual tap). Right now I have Stone Go To and Stoudts Gold for the summer months of easy drinking.

    You'll love that kegerator.......trust me.

Got my kegerator setup last week - put a local mango wheat on first which is a nice easy drinker for summer. Going to put 2 homebrew kegs in there once they're done fermenting. Also from PA here, will hopefully keep 1 commercial sixtel on, might go with an oktoberfest next after this is kicked.

As far as something I would want on draft at home, I would probably want an IPA, APA, etc. Something refreshing and drinkable. Stone Go-To is a good choice. Lagunitas IPA, Little Sumptin, Head Hunter, etc would also be tasty.

Can we get some of the more seasonal / rare stuff also? Beers like dirt wolf, JuJu, Chillwave, etc…

I also make trips to NC fairly often and am thinking about trying to bring home a sixtel from wicked weed…hoping for a freak of nature DIPA.

I know around me i can get Dirtwolf, but i'm pretty close to Victory. When i trip to chicago i might stop by Fat Heads to pick up a sixtel of something, i love headhunter and really need to try both juju and sunshine daydream

Just blew a keg of a Blueberry Imperial Brown, from Quest (Tolba). We still have a keg of Thomas Creek Banana Split Chocolate Stout on the other tap.

I need to buy something lighter, for the next few months., but nothing out there screams 'buy a sixtel!' to me right now.

Keep in mind that most places will charge a deposit on kegs, which they return to you when you return the keg. So, it's usually easiest to get a keg from somewhere local so you don't lose a deposit.

Also, it's technically illegal to carry any alcohol across state lines. I know people do it often without issues, but that's usually small quantities. If you get stopped for a traffic violation and a cop sees a keg in the back of your car you might get some uncomfortable questions, fines, and/or they could confiscate the beer. Do whatever you want, but know the risks...

Very true! Good point - plenty of good beers around here for me to pick up.

The first keg I got was a 1/6 of Sam Adams Winterfest. I thought it would last about 2 months and didn't want to waste beer. Needless to say, I didn't waste no beer; I wasted money buying a 1/6 keg instead of a 1/2 keg. The 1/6 lasted about 2 weeks (Holiday season/parties/etc). The 1/6 = about 55-12 oz beers (or 41-16 oz beers; normal size). The 1/2 keg is 3x the amount of the 1/6.

I get my kegs from a friend who runs a bar at their cost (Saves about $50 per 1/2 keg). I also don't have to pay for a deposit. That's another reason I get 1/2's instead of anything smaller.

Is it legal for a bar owner to order kegs for someone else? Just wondering...

I wouldn't think so. They sell package stuff to go as well.

A sixth lasting 2-3 months? I don't think so. It's 55 beers. You will run through it much faster. Most kegerators will hold two sixths, some will hold 3. Upgrade the tower, keep a pair on tap of different styles.

My kegerator will hold two sixtels. And I agree with @DougC123 that a sixtel holds about 55 x 12 oz beers. Most of my sixtels don't last a month.

Just ran through a Dominion Lager on Saturday for a party (story behind this keg - I order a Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold but TW screwed up and the Dominion is the same style).

Followed that up with a Oskar Blues Mama's Lil Yellow Pils. I myself have at least one pour off the keg every night. Great summer beer.

The other thing I find makes me drink more and kegs go faster is partial pours. As you wind down a session and are at a point where you wouldn't open a full beer if you were drinking bottles or cans, you don't actually have to stop with a keg and you can just have a half pour. Also deadly is the walking by and top it off pour.

I hope you are western PA or you won't sniff Fat Heads stuff. We can't get it here in Philly and it pisses me off, love their stuff.

Go To IPA is a great choice, I have that on tap right now. Lagunitas only sells halves here, no sixtels so no IPA or LSS. Dirt Wolf is always available here in the east, but maybe not where you are, good choice if you can get it (it is year round). Chillwave would be great too, but the sixtels are rare here, maybe not so much for you.

Other great choices are always SN seasonals, Firestone Walker, Stoudts, Sly Fox, Stone Ruination, IPA, Arrogant B, Troegs etc.

Yep, I am in Pittsburgh and have plenty of access to Fatheads! All of the choices you listed sound great - except I can't get Firestone Walker over here unfortunately.
