Let me first start off by saying that I've planned a week long road trip first to Vermont (Saturday 7/12-Wed J7/16) and then Boston (Thursday 7/17-Saturday 7-19) . I basically have a dilemma...for the following Saturday (7/19), I could either leave for home (from Boston) and hit up Tree House and NEBCO on my way home OR I could stay in Boston an extra day and hit up more breweries all around the city on Saturday and then leave Sunday morning. Which option do you think I should choose? Which option do you think would be more worth my time? It has to be one or the other. Unfortunately it can't be both. Let me know please!

I'd say go for it with Treehouse and NEBCO. You will probably be able to get all you need from Boston (brewery-wise) in 2 days...My 2 cents anyway. I do wonder if you can make both places in a day though if you start at Treehouse and its a mob scene (I have suffered through a 3 hour wait, uncommon I'm sure, but from experience; possible) then the hour and 45 min (???? Guessing here) drive to New Haven. Might be tight. I assume if you can cruise through Treehouse it won't be an issue though.

tongue firmly in cheek, it kinda depends on which breweries you're hitting Th/Fri in Boston and which you might do on Sat. If you're hitting Harpoon and Sam Adams, leaving Trillium for Sat, I'd stay in Beantown. If you're hitting all the primo spots Th/Fri, leaving Harpoon for Sat, I'd say hit the road & head west.

Agreed! If you get to Tree House by 11am (or slightly before), you can probably get out in less than 30-45 minutes. If you look at the ontap selections for that weekend and Julius is on, just freaking GO!

Head to Treehouse and NEBCO. I can't recommenced Treehouse enough, you wont regret the visit even with a long wait. In terms of Breweries in Boston the big ones have been mentioned and could be done easily in two days. I went to Trillium last week on a Thursday and even with sampling I wasnt in there to long. If you find you have some extra time in Boston after those breweries I will mention Jacks Abby is about ~30min drive from the city with plenty good beer to sample.

Could you sum up all the primo spots in Boston you think are worth going to Thursday and Friday? So far, I'm gonna go to Trillium and Night Shift, and possibly Cambridge. Any other primo breweries you think I'm missing??

Cambridge Brewing is awesome for food and beer. Definitely have a meal there and try some beers, their sours and barrel aged stuff (Arquebus is on!) are amazing. Nightshift is pretty awesome. I haven't been to Mystic, but its pretty close to Nightshift. Trillium is in South Boston near Harpoon. Harpoon has the best soft pretzels! The Bee's Knees is a good lunch spot around the corner from Trillium. Jacks Abby is about 25 min west of Boston in Framingham and definitely worth a stop. Definitely go to Treehouse and Nebco. Keep in mind in MA breweries will only fill their own growlers. I think Jacks Abby and Nightshift have a deposit that you can get back when returning the growler. Treehouse and Trillium, you keep the growlers you buy. Nebco will fill basically any growler.

Jack's Abby, Treehouse and then Nebco. grab a hotel in New haven, hit up some beer bars and grab dinner. then head home on sun morning. no brainer imo.

I always suggest that people seek out Trillium beers at local bars, there are plenty of them around and they are advertised on the brewery website. That way you can save money on growlers you'll never use again. Visiting the brewery is basically the equivalent of going to a gas station, with much less convenient parking. And it smells way better. Also, full disclosure, I'm not as big a Trillium fanboy as some on this site. I like their flagship and fort point pale ale, but I'm not as high on most of the rest. Most of the other local Boston breweries seem to be north of the city, and since I live south of the city it's been more difficult for me to visit them.

I would highly recommend that you visit Jack's Abby, Tree House, and NEBCO. Jack's opens at noon, so I would make it a point to get there either on Thursday or Friday earlier in the day. Then hit the other two on the Saturday in question.

that about sums it up for me too. and yes, the MA growler laws are bizarre and make things unnecessarily expensive, esp for the non-regular. Not sure what your nightlife schedule looks like but these are the places I look forward to going to when I hit Boston:

Lord Hobo (3 blocks from Camb Brewing)
    Deep Ellum (in Allston)
    Salty Pig (Back Bay Area)
    Redbones (David Sq in Somerville)
Stoddards (Theater District near the common)

for Italian in the North End:
    Trattoria Il Panino

Have a great time! Looks like a great trip

Trillium takes 30min max. They only give four 2oz pours. Plus its a super small tap room. They may give tours but hasn't every one seen a mash tun and fermenting tanks.

You have to go to Tree House. No question!

Trillium is absolutely worth a visit. Its the only place that will have all their beer in one location and only a few stores have Trillium bottles for sale so the brewery is the best bet for bottles. Plus the amazing Row 34 is next door.

If you are doing Sam Adams check out the growler cooler. They just started selling experimental small batches in growlers. Nearby is Streetcar, a great craft store and one of the only 3 or so stores that have Trillium bottles.

Don't leave Boston until you've gone to Cambridge Brewing Company, and try to hit Lord Hobo which is in the same neighborhood.

Yes, it's worth a visit, and I didn't realize that they had increased the number of bottles that they have for sale (that's a good thing). It's just really easy to drop like $30+ bucks there for 4 pints of beer when you could just as easily drop like $12-14 for 2 pints at a bar. Just trying to give an alternate opinion since 90% of people on this site seem to love the brewery (which is fine), but 100% of the people that I know (4 others I've shared these beers with) seemed the feel the same way that I do.

    Cheers

That sounds like a really good idea. Any good beer bars in New Haven that you can recommend? What about awesome places to eat?

Bar is good if you like bacon mashed potato pizza and then I'll leave it up to the New Haven folks to fight about who has the best pizza. I would concentrate on the pizza though in New Haven.

Can you tell me what makes NEBCO worth visiting? I'm looking on their site and can't find an updated tap list...just a list of beers that they offer in cans/bottles and on tap. It's just a tad frustrating. And how many offerings do they usually have for growlers?

Honestly, I've only ever had Sea Hag, but the friends I drink with have been encouraging me to try out more of their stuff, I just haven't had the opportunity. I'm not sure how the brewery works or what is in the neighborhood. I know Boston a lot better, and you should be able to visit most of the places that you'd like to in a couple days, and it seems more likely that you will visit Boston in the future versus the stops along the way. My recommendation is based on the assumption that you will have more opportunities to visit Boston and the immediate area versus the relative fly-over country in between.
