I recently stumbled upon a bottle of prairie bomb! in Southern California. They only had one so I'm curious if anyone had thoughts about sitting on it for a while or drinking it straight away.

Also do they distribute out here or is this technically an illegal sale?

Drink now. I'm a believer in drinking beer fresh if you've never had it before. Plus, the flavors in Bomb will fade a bit with time

Distributed by Shelton Bros. so should be perfectly legal. And I encourage to drink it now. Damn delicious beer.

I've heard its being distributed to some parts of California like San Diego, L.A. & the Bay Area. I've had a few from trades and they have been great!! So unless you are saving it for a special occasion I say drink it ASAP.

Thanks for the responses, that was my leaning as well, especially with the vanilla, coffee and chilis. However, it seems every one in a while you run into a beer that defies all logic and is better with a year or so on it.

I recommend drinking it now since you have never had it before. It's great fresh.

And yes, it is perfectly legal. Prairie has been distributing to Southern California for at least a year and probably more. You should check out their lineup, they have some awesome beers.

Awesome! I've only had Prairie Standard which I absolutely loved, and Prairie Ale which was solid, so I'm willing to try just about anything from them.

My rule for beer - regardless of style, if I only have one and I've never tried it, I drink it straight away

If you never had ANY beer before, drink it.

Cause ya can't drink when you're dead.

You don't know what I'm capable of!

But yeah, Fresh bomb is great, no need to age it if you've only got the one.

Seconding (thirding, fourthing, fifthing?) the previous comments. Even if someone can give you a good idea of a beer's perfet "age", they may not have the same taste preferences as you.

There certainly are beers that are better with a year on them. However, the way I see it is that you can either miss out on the ability to have something fresh in the hopes that someone's advice is correct, or you can miss out (for now) on the chance to try it with age on it, which still leaves open the option that someday you will find another bottle and be able to decide for yourself if it's better with a year on it or not.

I find that an aged bomb is not nearly as good. The coffee and chili fade causing it to taste more like a brownie than a bomb

Was there a major difference between this year and last? I got some when it came around Denver and it was tasty, but the Bomb! from last year with the orange wax BLEW it out of the water. I still have some more from this years batch that I hope taste closer to the waxed one.

The chili is not as present in the newer batches.

Every batch since the original has continued to mellow, if you ask me. Still a very good beer nonetheless.

I had the one with the Orange wax a couple of months ago, I was not able to have it fresh. I had this after having a Bible Belt and noticed that the coffee and chili had faded. I had a fresh batch this last time around and liked it a great deal more, but am unable to compare it to fresh Bomb from last year.

I've had a red wax fresh and drank another one just recently. Unfortunately, mine suffered from the cap oxidation issue they sometimes have. Tasted like spicy rust. Drink it now.
