So I was cruising through the top Northwest beers list and came across this http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/20680/116702/
    The Rusty Nail. Imperial Stout.
Problem is that there is not one single review. All ratings. So here we have a beer rated world class and you can't tell a single thing about it other than it gets good numbers. IMHO no beer should sit on any top 250 list without at least ONE review. End rant, thank you for your time.

I looked at the top 250 list a bunch when I first started perusing the site, but havent as much as glanced at it in weeks. Who cares? I put less and less weight on that list

I am guilty of using numbers but I wish I didn't have the option. Without the number option the top 250 might resemble something more legit!!

Except I'm not using the overall top 250. I'm talking about the regional 250, by including these ticker beers you don't get to see a lot of nice beers that you can actually learn about.

I very rarely look at that list and when I do I don't really look to see if the beers on that list have reviews or if they are simply quick ratings ticks. I find my own reviews become skewed sometimes and I find myself almost looking for those same observations in my own tastings. I don't always do reviews either, sometimes it's a little tough to get my own observations out of my head and into the written/typed word.

Most interesting man: I don't always do reviews...but when I do it's a little tough to get my own observations out of my head and into the written/typed word. Just kidding, I've never tried anything other than Dos Equis and that's why I prefer it.

Most modern instant-gratification-addicted people are going to use the simplest and least time-consuming option available, even if the truest interpretation of their contribution is lost.
There's even some brain trust that keeps touting the use of hashtags so that he doesn't have to do his own searches.

agreed on the lack of info from all ratings and no reviews. How can anyone gauge if they would like the beer. What are its features? Good thing to notice IMO.

I would go further and say a beer should have a review to be added to the site. Used to be this way, and the site was more useful because of it. Wanna add a beer? Review it. That way every beer is guaranteed to have at least one review.

Since I am already on this soapbox: I see all kinds of reasons why folks don't review beers. Here is the best reason to review. It helps folks enjoy their beer better.

This is not a glitch. The system is working as intended. Users are allowed to rate or review a beer.

I moved your post to Help > Site and tagged it as a Feature Request.

We have no intentions of requiring reviews before a beer can be listed (or entered), however, we do have plans to make the entire rating system much easier while encouraging thoughtful reviews at the same time. More on that within the next week or so.

Todd - I have seen you post before that the number of new beers added to the site has increased significantly since you made this policy change. I don't mind the shift, and have added several beers myself that I drank but didn't have an opportunity to write a full review of.

However, there has also been a large amount of duplicate beers entered (and being rated/reviewed by other people). I've reported the ones I've noticed, but (in some cases) it's been months with nothing being done about it. I saw your "Adding Beers" guidelines, but I suspect that if people are not detail-oriented, or too lazy/drunk/whatever to do a thorough search before adding a beer, the guidelines will do little to slow that down.

I get that there was an increase in people to go through and weed out the duplicates, approve picture submissions, etc. So perhaps it will get better. But the particular ones I've been watching have yet to be consolidated. Just my two cents...

You raise a good point, but it's unrelated to this thread/feature request.

Keep on reporting duplicate beers (which have always occurred regardless of ratings or reviews). We'll eventually merge them, and personally I've been merging a handful a day.

I heartily encourage any kind of improvement on this issue. As it is working now there is a lot of empty useless content promulgated on the top beers lists (regional) I fully understand the reasons for simple ratings (ease of use=more users),but what worth to anybody is a score with no content? Numbers by themselves mean nothing. Anyway thanks for the great site. A loyal follower.

This discussion has occurred many times. We have the reviewers, the raters, and those who do both. Just because you don't find value in one form of contribution, doesn't mean others don't.

On a side note, and to counter your example of a beer with only 17 ratings, here's another example on the same list with 17 ratings and 5 reviews: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16589/123401/. My point: reviews eventually happen.

Anyway, look for more on encouraging (and rewarding) reviews soon.

Go to Beers -> Top 250 Beers, then look on the right sidebar and there are the regional lists (though they are only the top 50 per region not 250).

How about this: If someone decides to rate a beer that is more than twice as high, or twice as low as the pdev, they must write a review that could hopefully explain their rating?

A bud light that is rated a 5? Please explain why you feel so.
A BCBS rated a 1? Please explain why you feel so.

Thanks, but we'll pass on this idea. Forcing people to justify their rating isn't a path that we want to explore.
