What's their shelf price on a 4-pack? The place up by me has $10.49- am I getting ripped off a bit? A whole case from them would cost $63, almost $10 more than Discount.

The cheapest I've ever seen any of the NG 4-packs is $9.99 at places like Woodmans or Piggly Wiggly.

Bought some today and cracked one open in the parking lot. Gf said it tasted metallic. I tried it. I agreed. When she opened it she noticed the cap was rusted and wiped the bottle down with a clean napkin and sure enough some rust came off. If anyone else notices it let me know as well. I took some pictures. As well and can post later

Hm. I've had rusted caps before, but in that situation I would say pouring into a glass might eliminate the metallic problem. With the thousands of caps that go out, some of them might be slightly defective and rust more easily.

Still, I'd shoot NG an email and let them know. They might want the cap/bottle back to test it.

I poured into a glass also got a metallic taste. It got better as it warmed, but still present. Solid brew but definitely rank it behind Enigma and WSA.

I agree with this but will have to try it out on a glass pour and hopefully my first experience was a fluke.

Yeah I wish I had a cup on me heh. I feel that if it was poured out of the bottle I would have had different taste experience. I kept the cap but tossed the bottle unfortunately didn't want the open container in my car but I could have tossed it in the trunk. I still have the test of the four pack and can check if it's the batch or a single bottle fluke. I'll shoot em an email

    Buy your cases now!

Nah, unless they determine that all the caps are rusting, I don't think they'll recall this beer.

I've had several (shhh) bottles and haven't detected any metallic flavors or rusted caps.

Several of the "reviews" on untappd make mention of the metallic flavor as well. It's not offensive, but it's there. I don't think it warrants a recall, I'm gonna revisit tonight.

"Metallic" is one of those off-flavors that picks up steam when it's mentioned in a few reviews. I'm not saying that people aren't tasting it, but some might be jumping to "metallic" to explain other flavors that they aren't used to or aren't expecting.

If it is brewing-related, it's either the water, the malts, or the equipment. I trust NG's brewing standards, so I'll rule out the equipment with one major caveat: if this is truly the first coolship beer, and if there were any metallic surfaces (not stainless steel, that wouldn't do it) that were exposed and left unprotected when in contact with the beer, that could do it. But I'm 100% confident this isn't.

Poor, old, or mis-stored Malts can impart some iron-ish flavors to beer.

Water- if there is some metal in the water that would certainly find it's way into the beer. But NG has a pretty great lab on site, I doubt they'd overlook something so simple.

My money is on a combination of yeasts/bacteria, aging, and a combination of flavors from the different brews used in this batch. The thing about a coolship is that no one knows for sure how it's going to play. And if they're aging the coolship dividends to blend into other beer, it's also hard for us to know how old that portion is. Some "sours" will impart pretty weird flavors at different points in their lives, this could be one of those points. I would love to try a bottle that someone says in metallic to see if I'm able to pick up on that flavor. So far I haven't been able to.

But this is a beer that travels that strange path from tart aroma to slightly sour to sweet to bitter and funky at the end.

I think it was $9.49 which is the same as Woodman's except that Woodman's drops to like 8.69 or so when you buy 6 so that 6th one ends up being less than $5. I have never seen the Thumbprints around Milwaukee for over $9.99 so yeah... you're paying too much.

There are a few shops I go to that mark things up $1-2. Theyr'e within walking distance, though, and pretty friendly, so I don't always mind. I was shocked to see CW BB beers up to $14.99 a 4-pack though. Feels like I was paying $12.99 last year.

:flushed: Why would they choose to pasteurize this one an let the others continue to mature? I enjoy WSA way more now then when it was fresh, and was hoping OB would follow the same path. Sad feelz.

I can only guess as to the reason. I would guess that Dan felt like the coolship beer had reached the point that he wanted it to be at for this blend, blended it, and pasteurized. It appears that his intention isn't to let the bacteria that were active continue to work in this beer. I still think it will develop nicely over time, a lot like a Dubbel.

I like it and get no metallic taste at all. I think I might actually prefer La Folie but $4$ NG wins every time.

Agree. Unless it's Brett or something, the character of the beer isn't really going to change with age by just pitching new brewer's yeast at bottling. Not to say, it won't change at all, but just not in the way that I was hoping for. Tis a shame, IMO.
