I know technically its not wrong to call a beer like that a pilsner but its not the 70's or 80's anymore and standards and expectations have changed due to the craft beer movement. If an old brewery wants to be stuck in the past and not change then fine. Its up to me to be smarter and more aware next time.

With "Deluxe" in the title shouldn't you have gotten fries with that?

A pilsner is a lager. Beer style names are shifting sands beneath our feet. How can this possibly rise to the level of false advertising?

It was German brewers who brought the use of rice and corn in lagers to the US when they came here in the 1800s. At that time the RHG only applied in Bavaria. German brewers also began brewing German style Pilseners in response to the popularity of traditional Pilseners from Pilsen.

Technically, it IS a lager. What does 2014 have to do with anything?

A good rule of thumb: Avoid beer with "premium" and "deluxe" on label.

Understood, but i remember Private Stock had similar puzzles inside the bottle caps back when I was in college in the 1980s.
I'm not familiar with Lionshead at all.

As another example...I've heard Arrogant Bastard ABV was actually like 7.6% but the bottle says 7.2%.

Lionshead was/is reserved for special occasions in college…otherwise it was straight natty 30 packs.

On REAAAAAALLY special nights, I got these:

…a natty light bottle is fucking classy.

Its the use of the world Pilsner.

Maybe he was expecting a beer brewed in one specific city in the Czech republic. :sunglasses:

TTB requires them to be within .2% if its listed on the label. Or maybe .3%. I know .4% difference is out of bounds.

Not that they test or anything.

Even in the days when I was drinking crappy beer I would never touch Natty. That shit is the foulest of the foul.

$8 a sixpack? That's twice the price in its home market of PA, where it sells in the sub-premium price segment.

FWIW- I paid under $8 for a sixer of Saranac Wild Hop Pils (not bad, considering the prices around here), and it's definitely in Pils territory. Not top tier by any means, but pretty good for the price. That might be more of what you're looking for.
