Some people's palates will taste metallic where others will taste a lemony or vinegar flavor. I really pick up a distinct lemony flavor on the finish. I often mix lemon juice with water to drink and it reminds me of that flavor. I'm not saying people are wrong to call it metallic, but I want others to have an idea of why there is mention of a metallic taste.

Just finished off three more bottles. In one of them when I first poured it I got a HINT of what could be considered metallic, but within minutes that flavor was completely gone and I was left with a tart delicious old brown beer. Maybe it's only in certain bottles, or maybe I'm just not very sensitive to whatever is causing that specific flavor for people.

Also, I listened to the old Jamil Show style podcast on Oud Bruin today at work. Learned a lot about the style, interesting stuff.

Yeah, I think I'm the first reviewer to note the metallic taste, so you guys can blame me for starting the trend. However, it did go away as it warmed up, presumably because the rest of the beer opened up. But if this pattern holds for the rest of the bottles I have, I'm going to be drinking them at cellar temp from here on. And I think Ri0 may very well be right, and I have not seen any rust on the cap of the bottle I opened two days back (just went back to take a look, its still on the counter).

Bummer. That's exactly how mine looks. How'd it taste? Is it possible that the caps alone we're oxidized prior to capping ?

    The taste was sensational.

Just looking at the photo, wouldn't that rust be on the outside, not in contact with the beer when sealed?

I believe so, but it could creep over time.

true. also, during distribution, i'd image the liquid would bounce and hit the top of the cap. i'd imagine there would be some other bacteria not visible to the naked eye.

honestly, i don't know shit about rust on caps and beer and bacteria. no way am i shitting on new glarus and honestly i didn't realize there was a trend for metallic tastes on the reviews, as soon as my girl and i tried it, i recalled someone on the boards mentioned this which is why i quoted the original post. again, i only wiped down the bottle, had no glass to pour my drink so 100 percent of the metallic taste could have gone from the bottle. after a long day today and i think tomorrow, not sure if i'll get a chance to try another bottle until sunday.

i'm just glad someone else noticed the rust in the caps and it's not me trolling. not to mention Ri0 said it tasted great.

I hadn't read any reviews before cracking mine last night so I didn't know what to expect. Among some other great flavors I noticed a metallic finish while the Oud Bruin was cold but it dissipated as it warmed....

Almost tastes like a spiced beer. Can see why people are saying metallic. I've also started to look at bottle caps and noticed some rust on the first one I looked at.

This thread is hilarious. Omg sour beer must buy all of it even though I haven't tried It. Tastes metallic and the caps are rusty, everyone panic!!!!

I wish people had the sense to idk maybe buy a four pack try it then decide if you want more but nope not BA's. I can only imagine what cranbic and BB kriek releases will be like.

Dan must have had a reason for pasteurizing. Might have to do with either end of the beers blended to make this (I'm just assuming it was blended- part-coolship, part-brown ale?). I trust his judgement. I think that the flavors will evolve and I am ok with the sourness being essentially "locked in". From what I can tell based on his email, he's leaning towards the oxidation aging effects you'd get with dubbel. He must think that those changes will be a nice compliment to the current sourness level.

It's fun to talk about. Sours brewed in Wisco are a fairly new thing, so I think this discussion is warranted. Craft beer is all about education, figuring out what you like, and souring is all about experimentation, figuring out what is causing what flavors, etc. But mostly it's about having fun.

Well you have to account for the BA's south of the border, so it is bound to be ridiculous. I mean we have the one pic already in the thread of someone from IL showing us the 4 case haul. lol

Agreed but why buy multiple cases then? If your just participating in a discussion about sours and the flavors presented it seems excessive and unnecessary.

There are only 24 bottles in a case- I'm certainly prone to buying 6-10 4 packs of each Thumbprint release over the time they are on the shelves, either for me or to trade to friends outside of Wisco. They are consistently high quality examples of the styles chosen, and they may never be brewed again. Added incentive on the Thumbprints like this one, which are cellarable. Plus, you end up saving $8-10 on a case. So I'll usually buy a case right off the bat, and a second if I decide I really like it and want to send it out to traders.

Is "Wisco" a common abbreviation for Wisconsin? I'd never really heard anyone use it (on the BA forums or in real life) until a few pages back, certainly not with any regularity. I know Stillmark makes a beer called "Wisco Disco," but I think it's just a play on words. Maybe I'm new here. I've only lived in WI for 15 years.

I had a 5 case haul, and I know several others that had that much or more. Yet I don't know of a single "fib" that bought more than a case for themselves, most keeping only 3 or 4 4-packs. Pickup up several cases for friends and tasting groups when you are all an hour+ drive away is not ridiculous if you ask me. The people buying and hoarding several cases for themselves are few and far between, and probably not posting about their craziness here. I guess it is fun to troll with such pictures though, it gets everyone all hot and bothered.

Bought a case today, some to drink now and the rest will stay in the cellar. Thank you Wisconsin for having a world class brewery right next door. (Even though it's the home of the hated rivals..sorry but I can't resist...BEAR DOWN). Haven't had a bad New Glarus beer yet, keep up the good work Dan!
