If anyone finds themselves in Virginia, specifically Harrisonburg, try Three Brothers Hefe. I honestly dare you to say it's not worthy of being in the top. I've had my share of great classic Hefe's and I hold this one up with them.

Generally it's hard to go wrong with any of the German hefes (Paulaner, Franziskaner, Weihenstephan, Hacker-Pschorr, Schneider, Ayinger etc.). I've seen a few mention Andechs, and I agree they make stellar beer...probably the best German brews I've ever had. Unfortunatley, I see the OP is in AZ (as am I), and Andechs isn't available here. :slight_frown:

But speaking of AZ, I do have to say I really enjoy SanTan Brewing's hefeweizen....it's heavy on the banana nose and a bit sweeter than the German varieties, but I quite like it. And it's available in cans, making it convenient for pool-time.

I picked up a mini keg of the Kapuziner hefe and it was very traditional like Weihenstephaner, Andechs, Paulaner, Hacker Pschorr, Franziskaner, Julius Echter, Schneider Weisse, Ayinger, Erdinger, etc. And the majority of them are a good price for the 500 ml or 6 pack.

Live Oak hefe is the bomb.Unless everybody who loves Weiss beer samples this beer than they will not know that the king(weihenstephaner) was dethroned when this beer entered the equation.Sorry New Glarus your Dancing Man is great but Live Oak -you cannot put enough superlatives into one sentence to describe this beer

Urban Chestnut Schnickelfritz is a solid Hefeweizen, that seems to be very underrated as far as I'm concerned.

I was just in Charleston, SC and went to the Holy City brewery and tried their Hefeweizen. It was extremely well crafted and this is my favorite style of brew. I would definitely buy this if I had an option in my local brew stores.

Just picked up some Yuengling Summer Wheat. Stuff is pretty legit. And at $6.99 a six-pack, the value for the price is tough to beat (Franziskaner has more depth of character, but may suffer from the long journey, making this a great alternative).

It's one of my favourite styles. I like it so much I'm going to Bavaria later on this year.

This is great to know, I hadn't heard much about it. Only that it was "authentic." I'll have to pick a few singles up. Anything widely available that it compares to?

    Just checked, 4.5% abv too!

On #2 now. Unfortunately, I am now picking up a slight vegetal quality in the finish. Still worth a shot, I'd say, but I'm now a bit less enthusiastic than I was after #1.

Ugh, that's unfortunate. The only unexpected flavor worse than vegetal in a German beer, is tropical, which keeps popping up in my pilsners.
