I would prefer a later release, personally. This buying a case every month gets steep. :stuck_out_tongue: And heaven forbid it's anywhere near BCBS season... Lol.

We also have to take into account the annual NG beer poll, which they do seem to pay attention to.

I hope you all voted for a Barleywine. It's been too long. I have one bottle of '12 left- many folks tell me it's best days have passed, but I'm still holding out to try it side by side with the next batch.

Actually, whole foods started doing a new beer discount late last year. Six SKU's of beer (doesn't matter if it's a duplicate) will get you an additional 10% off. They don't really promote it the way they promote the wine 'case' discount when you get 6 bottles of wine. If you do get a case, that's actually $32.40 +tax.

Just make sure that if you get a case of Spotted cow, they don't scan the case, but have them scan the barcode on the 6pack container. If it's a case of six pack containers, get 2 more additional beers to buy. whether it's loose, bomber or another 2 six packs you'd like, it'll be worth it for a few extra dollars.

I highly doubt it, definitely a one off sale. If you remind me, or don't forget. i can confirm tomorrow.

While that store is large, some times they don't have the back stock space or aren't allowed based on movement. It may not be worth the hassle of hanging on to beer to make a vertical. Unless it's like a special event for ' "insert city" Beer Week'. but even at that, i doubt people would line up. The store wants to make sales.

Other whole foods in chicago have good selections, larger shelf and cooler space and have high movement in the craft selection. one of the whole foods in chicago has 2 beer bars (plus a wine bar) the second bar has a 'vintage menu'. People do go there and look for other 'gems'. Last year during Chicago craft beer week, they were hanging on to probably a case each of GI Madame Rose, Lolita and Juliet of 2010 vintage (for a few months). This year for Chicago craft beer week, they had about a case of 2009 BCBS Bombers for sale at 15 dollars, which was basically retail. Besides the BCBS bomber, they had 2013 bcbs and i think a keg of bcbs barleywine. My point is though, they have the space, KNOW people will line up and hang out to drink and eat. That 15 dollar bomber was really about 40 bucks per person after a second or third beer and a couple of slices of pizza. Whole foods will sell you beer retail but wants you to hang out and spend some more.

Just to be clear, i'm in no way saying chicago has better beer selection, better craft drinkers, etc. i'm just stating what i know about whole foods in general and in MKE/MAD

This is possible, but i doubt the distributor had extra. One of the whole foods in chicagoland suburb had Avery's Old Jubilation ale (xmas seasonal) at about 6.99 a six pack. Unfortunately, it was that one store only as they had a ton of backstock. i totally regret not making the drive and buying some. (they had this sale TWICE)

In new glarus news, i just opened my second bottle of oud bruin (first one was last week friday). this beer does NOT taste what i tasted the first time, metallic flavors. it didn't have a rusty bottle cap either.

I think it's going to be part of the coolship process, especially when blending, to get some off bottles. Dan will figure it out. I haven't had a "bad" bottle yet (no metallics) but I have noticed that this beer is very sensitive to what you are eating or what you might drink before it. I'm going to say six months from now this beer will actually be mellower and more consistent than it is now, based on the amount of malt and residual sugar flavors I get from it.

Weird to see so many different tastes bottle to bottle, though. Haven't had that from New Glarus before.

MKE's Whole Foods is on the schedule for an upgrade, most likely with a pub, in the next year or two. The on-tap selection is pretty solid, but only 5 taps of beer (1 of wine) isn't really going to demand a lot of attention. Still, $4 pints of ZD are a nice surprise when grocery shopping. (Honey, I forgot the tomatoes.)

"Aromas or tastes similar to iron, rust, coins or blood. Its presence has a number of causes: rusty pipes or water, high malt roasting temperatures or staleness. Usually an off flavor."

Could be the malts, there are definitely some medium-roast malts in the brown ale used for this beer. If that's the case, it might not be from the coolship portion of the beer at all.

    Also some aged hops.

I've had bottles from 2 different 4-packs and haven't had any metallic flavors. It's pretty much what I'd expect from a soured brown ale.

I think this is part of the "sour beer" learning curve. They present a whole different palette of flavors, many of which could be identified as off-flavors in "regular" beers.

Many times you just have to accept them for what they are and go along for the whole ride.

I've said this before, but drink Oud Bruin while eating something sweet, like peanut butter cups. The sugars open up your palate and you'll enjoy the sourness followed by the roasted sweetness in the beer, and even the bitter charge at the end. Then take another bite of the pbc to ready yourself for the next sip.

You can twist and tease your palate so many ways it can be fun... or it can be disastrous.

I used to freak people out by eating Oreos with Guinness Extra Stout -- but then I'd ask what wine they might pair with a flour-less chocolate cake and the lightbulb would appear over their heads.

Lol. There are so many different kinds of yogurts, cheeses, and fruits... Dan is a funny guy

I didn't get much cheese from OB, not really that "funky" of a beer. Lots of figs, raisins, currants, even a little sour apple. Maybe a touch of greek yogurt mixed in there.

I've had one so far and I got the tartness and what I would expect from this style. No metallic taste. The only thing I found weird about it is that the taste just seemed to vanish. I got the tartness and instead of it slowly fading away in the aftertaste, it just stopped. Perhaps I'm imagining thing. It was good, just found that a bit odd. But overall I like it and going to let mine age while slowly drinking them.

Regarding the "metallic" flavor, I did pick up a little bit of it right in the middle, not sure how I would even describe it though. The first thing I thought after a few sips is that this beer is like Enigma's little brother. It starts out a lot like Enigma on the front but doesn't finish with the same POW like Enigma did.

I know exactly what you're saying and I thought the same thing. It's like at a certain point the finish just hits a wall and does not continue.

That would be a perfect description of it (from my tasting perspective). And the only other point to make is that a couple people were there with me that also tried it on the day it dropped and they thought it had already gotten a little better.
