For our first event of Portland Beer Week, Wildwood will be hosting Alex Ganum of Upright Brewing for a six course beer pairing dinner on Thursday, June 7 at 6:30pm. Alex has very generously provided an exciting lineup of vintage and limited release beers including Pure Wit, Blend Love, Fantasia, both vintages of Fourplay, batch 3 Late Harvest, and batch 2 Billy the Mountain. It has been a lot of fun putting this event together, and I look forward to seeing some of the BA crowd there. Check out the event listing linked below for menu and details.

Details coming soon on our Firestone Walker Dinner 6/12 and PDX Beer Week Beer & Food Pairing Seminar featuring chefs Aaron Barnett (St. Jack), John Gorham (Toro Bravo), Nathaniel Price (Grain & Gristle), and myself with brewers Alex Ganum, Ben Edmunds (Breakside), Charlie Devereux (Double Mountain), and Nick Arzner (Block 15).

    Cheers,
    Paul

Any chance of a vegetarian option at this event or any of the others?

I've had every single beer on the menu...and there's not a thing wrong with that! Fantastic looking menu Paul. Thanks for posting here on BA. I hadn't heard of this before hand. My wifes birthday is June 6th but our schedules keep us from going out that night. She loves Upright so this is going to essentially be her birthday dinner. Anybody who knows me be sure not to mention it to her though. I'm going to try and keep it a surprise. This is going to be great and she's going to be psyched I'm sure. Looking forward to it!

They are also really making me start to hate my job.*

    * because of the fact that having to work keeps me from attending these

Just to throw out my two cents... I've only been to one of these Wildwood Dinners (the Block 15 event during OBF last year), but it was just excellent. The event was really well organized... beers and food were excellent and well thought out, with everything going very well with the course it was paired with. The discussion of the individual beers didn't run too long (always a problem - I've been to some beer dinners that ran over 3 hours!), and the discussions were informative and interesting. Also, there were a lot of like minded beer geeks there, and I met a lot of very nice, very cool people at my table.

IMHO, the Wildwood dinners are some of the best events going during Portland Beer Week.

I went to the Deschutes/HotD dinner, and it was spectacular. Not sure if I will go to this one, because I've had all the beers and the food pairings don't tug on my pork belly obsessed appetite.

The only thing wrong with that menu, aside from it not being vegetarian friendly:wink:, is the lack of Engelberg pilsner...

It's always you with the comment on Engelberg Pils haha. You must have brought growlers back home with you after your visit.

    I also wholeheartedly agree

hehe, i loved that beer, was shockingly* one of the highlights of my recent trip.

in other news... we might be moving there, so id get to enjoy it more often:slight_smile:

    * I say shockingly as I almost didnt order it, only at the insistence of a friend, and I am so inundated with pilsners here.

I'll take the non-response as a "no" re: vegetarian. I mean, I know Portland is obsessed with pig, but I have yet to see a single beer dinner offering a veg. option... Whereas on the East Coast, at least in Boston, it was extremely common. Oh well, plenty of other beer events, count this as a vote for some vegetarian friendly beer dinners in the future.

I think those straight edge people are on the wrong forum.

    Praise the pig!

I wish I could attend this dinner. I was at the Deschutes/HotD Collage event and it was an extremely pleasurable and perfectly executed collaboration. I'm sure this one will not disappoint.

These events are quite an undertaking, and with just myself and a few of our line cooks who generously donate their time to work these dinners, it is not really feasible to be cooking two separate six course menus at once in our banquet kitchen.

As for the complicated answer, we have made an exception several times in the past for a vegetarian companion or member of a group. In that case, we would serve that person small vegetarian plates from that night's dining room menu prepared in our main kitchen. Those dishes won't pair tightly with the beers, but are really the best accommodation we can make at this time.

I think there has to have been some vegetarian or vegan beer dinners in Portland, or at least, as pkasten alluded to, times when dinners catered to vegetarians.

I think aside from the most breweries per capita, or at least high on the list, portland probably has the most vegan restaurants per capita. In addition to strictly vegan + vegetarian, in inordinate amount of restaurants there have delicious veggie options.

Really though, someone like Portobello or Blossoming Lotus havent done a beer dinner?

Hell I know of at least 3 vegan beer dinners that have taken place in Jacksonville, Fl.
