How To Blow $9 Billion: The Fallen Stroh Family http://www.forbes.com/sites/kerryad...-the-largest-private-beer-fortune-in-the-u-s/
Sure it was the same story? Article's sub-head reads: This story appears in the July 21, 2014 issue of Forbes. Not sure if Forbes puts their magazines on the stands that far ahead of time, especially when they mark them with an exact date.
Yes, same article. If you look at the top of the posting you will see that while it says it will appear in print July 21, it was posted on line July 8th at 8:00 and has 300k views. here is a cut and paste of the by line. 7/08/2014 @ 8:00AM 321,636 views How To Blow $9 Billion: The Fallen Stroh Family This story appears in the July 21, 2014 issue of Forbes. So no, they don't put their magazines out that far ahead of time, but it doesn't stop them from dropping e stories anytime they want to.
Stroh's should have stopped with F&M Schaefer. Schaefer was a dying brand but it owned a brewery that was less than10 years old and could brew up to 5,000,000 Barrels a year.
From the article: In 1999, "Pabst bought the rest of the brands owned by Stroh’s as well as its brewery near Allentown, Pa." That brewery is now a Sam Adams brewery. Looks like Pabst closed that brewery only 2 years later in 2001: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Pabst+will+close+Stroh+Lehigh+in+September.-a078841092
"Unable to spur demand through marketing, Stroh turned to price, introducing a 15-pack for the price of 12 cans and a 30-pack for the price of a case of 24." Anyone know if Stroh's was the first to offer the 30 pack of cans? Interesting since this is pretty much now a standard for all of the domestic lagers.
Neither could I, but it was here. Does it really matter? It is a good read as I said earlier. If you do a Bing search for "Stroh family fortune" among the results you get the following link returned that points to this site, but the listed article cannot be found. Like I suggested earlier, it may have gotten moderated out. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/how-to-blow-9-billion-the-fallen-stroh-family.193243/
The original posting was made on July 9th, there is a cached version of the page in the Bing search results. Moderated out, and removed from the original posters history of threads started. Again, it doesn't matter.
There's a name I haven't thought of or come across in a few years. I enjoyed the handful of short stories I read. Woe is Stroh's. Interesting read.
Sad story, I grew up in Detroit and Stroh's was the best macro draft beer I ever had (up until 1982 or so). I used to wander down Gratiot Ave. and go to the brewhouse where it was as fresh as you could possibly get. Obviously, big mistake acquiring those other breweries. The taste of Stroh's suffered exponentially.
