Schlitz is in first. PBR in second place. High Life in third I guess. I rarely drink my "first place" AAL, let alone my "third place".

It's all about the Schell's: Grain Belt Premium, Deer Brand and Hauenstein are all pretty good. Also Leinie's original.

BM isn't a lager, but it's still very good.

High Life, although Coors Banquet or PBR will do in a pinch.

Its fine to think of YTL as "real" lager rather than AAL. Adjuncts such as rice or corn have been in use in lagers in the US and other countries since long before there was an AAL category. There are other ambers that use corn as well, and just use of an adjunct isn't enough to get a beer categorized as AAL. Indeed, if using an adjunct were the only basis for putting a beer into the AAL category there's a few "craft" beers out there that also should be moved as well. (Including at least one DIPA I can think of without having to bother to check.)

Well, perhaps I shouldn't have used the term "real" in referring to YTL. I do realize that AALs are lagers and the style guidelines permit the use of adjuncts. I also realize that there is some fluidity in style designations. My question should have been more clearly worded to ask whether YTL can be classified as an AAL. I looked at the Yeungling website and cannot see if they use corn or rice in theYTL recipe.

    Understood.

Yuengling does use flaked corn. In fact on the tour of the brewery they show visitors a quart size bottle with layers and proportional amounts of the various grains and other dry ingredients.

I'd suggest it doesn't need to be moved to the AAL category simply for the reasons I gave above. Basically the classification of AAL is based on more than one criterion. And there are other style categories that permit the use of adjuncts. So if they were to use a single criterion for categorization, a whole lot of beers would have to be moved.

Tom, @jesskidden has reported that some of the Yuengling beers are brewed using corn syrup (maybe it is a Florida brewery thing?). Was there any mention of corn syrup on your tour? When was your tour?

    Cheers!
