So I'm just now watching the third Episode of BeerMasters when they accidentally bottle Punkin with twist-off bottles. (I know I'm a bit late, but I've been paused in the middle of The Wire finale since Summer of 2009 so I've done worse ...) I get why they're stressed out on the show, because they didn't have the correct caps for the bottles ... But does anyone have any experience with cellaring twist-offs? Experience a loss of carbonation or leaking cap? I assume that for immediate consumption twist-offs are comparable in terms of maintaining quality. Any objections?
Here is a great post that highlights the impact of a twist-off cap: much less oxidation (that's clear from just looking!) and better head retention.
Thanks. Tried searching but focused on thread topic. Really interesting the degree of color change, but also that the favorites were all from the twist-off era. Could be because they were the among the older vintages, but you'd think the oxidation would negatively impact ...
I agree and I definitely think you are correct that the age of the beers outweighed the oxidation. It will be very interesting to track the reviews of cellared 2008+ vintages to see if Bigfoot remains the beloved aging beer that it is. I'd reckon it will become even better, only because everyone who has it on tap in aged kegs raves about it. Reducing the amount of oxidation by ending the twist-off cap era was a(nother) great decision by Sierra Nevada.
I did not get that from looking at the picture. There were about 4 with better head retention, and there have been about 4 since the change was made to pry offs. They went to pry offs due to about 20 times less O2 ingress through the cap with material that limits the O2 ingress. Wait - I get your point - the 4 on the left are the pryoffs.
I recently did a 6 year vertical tasting from SN on Celebration (06-11 I think) and actually the two oldest were the last of the twist offs and finished 1, 2 from the general consensus of the group... The tasting was blind and all years lined together in random order... Interesting!
