And Snake River in Jackson has an AK Session Ale, a Dark Mild with these commercial notes: AK Session is traditional English mild ale. Mild refers to its low hopping rate. Mild is an ale intended to be consumed in quantity, thus the name “session”. AK is thought to stand for “Ale Kyte”, Flemish for “small ale”.

So I definitely learned something from this post.

Thank you for this. I thought I just wasted 7 minutes of my life reading this whole thread.

Noted. Thanks. We're now up to 2. Theres a Snake River AK in Wyoming.

I doubt Hogshead bottles it since beer is described as one of their cask series by a reviewer.

Edit: Ah, I see Bitterbill beat me to it. :-)

There's a little mention of the one from Hogshead (and the "Ale Kyte" name) in here:

You'll want to read Cornell's blog and Ron's critique (expressed above on page 1 of the thread) before putting too much faith in what you've learned.

Yeah, Martyn mentions that beer at the bottom of his blog post. Brewer calls it a mild.

At this point, even if I find an AK beer, I will refuse to drink it.

    So there. Nyaah nyaah.

I've had an AK, at least. It was at the Nag's Head in Covent Garden after an argument with my wife that was resolved only by me spending a couple hundred (!) pounds on an admittedly very nice overcoat in one of the Covent Garden stalls, in f***ing July, but at least it was one she assured me was worth 2-3x that. But I digress.

The AK in question was from McMullen and while it was nice I preferred the Country Bitter which preceded the AK (and the one that followed the AK as well, truth be told: i required a fairly quick 3 pints in succession in a cool pub on a warmish July day, after a spousal argument in a foreign country--one cannot retire to one's office, or take a hike for an hour or so, one is stuck until a resolution is reached--not to mention the splashing out of 200 quid, for an overcoat in the middle of the summer)

I believe I read somewhere that McMullen once called this a "mild bitter" which is probably wonderfully confusing to people who like to classify these things (beer taxonomists?) but actually, in my memory, a fairly accurate description of the pint in question. Certainly not a mild but not quite a bitter? But it's been 11 years and I may misremember. She still has the coat, an off-white cashmere number.

I seem to remember a pint of McMullens AK a couple of years ago.

    Still there...http://www.mcmullens.co.uk/our-beers/mcmullen-ak

Edit: Still wouldn't drink it. Hmmpff.

Edit: Whoa, just watched the video on that page. Another theory!

Now I'm really not gonna have one.

Thanks for that link. I was a little bit surprised to see that chocolate malts were used to brew the McMullen AK.

    Cheers!

    “Brewed est. 1833

    McMullen AK

    Cask - 3.7%

As one of the longest established ales in the UK, the quality of AK comes from 180 years of brewing experience at The Whole Hop Brewery. Our award-winning bitter uses a carefully balanced mixture of pale ale and chocolate malts to give a soft malty taste, while WGV hops give a light fragrant aroma and clean finish. A popular and refreshing easy-drinking bitter.Cyclops:

    Cyclops - BITTER / ABV 3.7%

    See - DARK AMBER

Smell - MOLASSES / DARK CHOCOLATE

Taste - HOPPY / SUBTLE SWEET

    Bitter - 2 / 5

    Sweet - 2 / 5”

ahhh. your point is, it was forgettable? or at least unmemorable?

Perhaps my rambling story explains why it was memorable to me.

I do like the looks of that Kris Englund recipe for the 1833 Kidd AK though. If nothing else I got that out of this thread.

So ater a bit of thought while running errands this afternoon I find myself still trying to figure out what confort zone you think those of us who took the time to open the OP and participate in the thread need to be pushed out of and why someone needs to do that for us?

Since I was speculating on the OP's intent, I don't think it serves any relevant purpose to explore that here. I'm happy to explain what I meant in a PM if you're genuinely interested.

I honestly am thankful to hear about the handful of examples people have thusfar mentioned, as the AK "style" sounds delicious. Perhaps the thread is already so off the rails that it serves little purpose anyway, but I am holding out hope of hearing about some more examples myself.

I have to admit that I had never heard of AK's before this thread. It has piqued my interest, unfortunately I doubt I will be able to find an example here. I could try brewing one but it would be great to find an example to know what i'm doing.

Yawn... just so you Americans know, there's more to beer than lots of hops and a high ABV! Yawn... falling asleep from my overly hopped DIPA - joking, I'm actually drinking an English Bitter right now. How weird is that?
