Here in the midwest Summit EPA and Grainbelt Nordeast serve the same purposes in working class bars that SABA and SABL do in the east, to wit, a nod toward craft beer that doesn't interfere with the sales of B/M/C Light. If, by chance, a beer snob wanders in, they'll have something we'll drink, but not so many choices that it drives out the regulars.

I've always enjoyed Boston Lager. It's nice to know that I can find it at most bars/restaurants even if they don't tend to carry much craft beer. Sam Adams only puts out a few beers that I genuinely enjoy, and that's one of them.

I haven't bought Boston Lager in a long time because there are so many other craft brews on the shelves. But if you serve it to me I will gladly drink it.

If you want a beer that tastes like a beer Boston Lager is a go to.

I drank SA Lager for 8 years or so mixed in with my nascar beer but when I started drinking 100% craft lagers and pales/IPA it now tastes too sweet for me. Great beer but just not for me.

My daughters (both under 10) absolutely loooooove Benihana. The only drinkable think on our local one's drink menu (and that includes the "wine list", and I use that term very loosely) is Boston Lager. After all these years, I still find it very drinkable. It doesn't stand up well to more modern recipes, but I won't hesitate to order it when nothing better is available.

I hope Jim Koch is watching, because that's a great line.

I personally really like SABL, as well as a significant portion of their other offerings.
The amount of hate BBC receives here is just annoying. Do they have misses and screw ups? Absolutely. Now you try making 200 different beers intended for mass-market appeal (for the most part), and tell me that they all come out amazing...

You know that 'underrated' topic we have going on?

Black Lager is the right answer.

At the end of day, this beer isn't crafty enough for craft beer drinkers and too crafty for the BMC crowd. It's hard to tow the line.

When Boston Lager is not considered a good option I'd say the craft industry and our palates have come a long way. There was a time (and for many it still is) when Boston Lager was the only good option among a sea of bad tap handles.

Totally agree. BL and Alaskan Amber were the Beers that got me into craft. Drank them for a couple of years after many Busch lights during my time in Pullman (then I had an arrogant bastard and was totally converted). Anyway, last summer, the family all met up for a reunion on the Oregon coast. My sister-in-law's parents flew in from Boston. Her dad likes to drink beer, so everyone directs him to me for the low down on beer. Her dad in the most naive/innocent voice asks me, "you ever hear about boston lager and do you get it out here in the west?" I just smiled and said something like, sure, we get that here and it's pretty good. We didn't happen to have any in the frig at the time, so I gave him a SN torpedo. (Blew his mind). Anyway, back on topic, I don't drink Boston lager often, but I do enjoy it...a good go to for drinking all day during March madness.

A couple good alternatives to BL and Eliot Ness that are pretty widely available on the east coast and more sessionable are Flying Dog Old Scratch and Heavy Seas Cutlass.

Eh , ok at best, really liked their Boston Stock Ale, the best they've brewed that's common. The best brew you gets at any commercial wings and things I suppose.

i don't hate it. Sam Adams Boston Lager is the perfect example of a beer i would gladly drink if it was free or on a menu of a restaurant that only offered that, coors and bud light.

Hell yeah it's still a great lager. It was awesome back in the day when it was the only good beer you could find without searching to hard, and it still remains a great brew now.

Boston Ale is pretty easy to find in my area as well, both as singles and in 6-packs. Sometimes I would take a BA over a BL but then other times I find it to be a bit too sweet, all depends on my mood I suppose.

But count me in for the Black Lager too, though, and I really enjoy that beer. SA really needs to do a brewer's pack of some sort with the Black Lager, Cream Stout...

It was a forerunner of mass produced craft brew. Like it or hate it, we have a lot of thanks to give, some bitter critique, and some praise when it is due. It's almost like enjoying a Bob Dylan song when he does not sing them....ie Hendrix or even the recently late and great Johnny Winter. Where would you be without the original????
