I'll be traveling back and forth from the Bronx to Lafayette St. in Manhattan for the next three months and aside from the beer bars listed here which are popular, are there any bars that surprised you with their beer selection, or ones that you frequent which are literally unknown? I'm aware of Jeffrey's on 60th street. Any other lesser known beer bars up and down Second Ave. which have impressed you?

    Stag's Head (good)
    Albion (good)
    Taproom (good)
    Manchester Pub (decent)

Bondurants is a cool neighborhood beer bar on 85th right off 2nd Ave. Usually there is a great tap list - check beermenus.

What's the limit on how far south you'll go? Houston?

And sorry - but have to disagree about Stag's Head. I work in the area - bad service and I wonder how often they clean the lines there.

Croxley Ales and Spitzer's corner don't get mentioned much.

Spitzer's is a good call. Rarely gets mentioned in NYC threads, but I prefer it to a lot of places that do

Does the main bar at the jeffery always smell like puke or is it just me?

Since you say Lafayette, I'll assume further downtown is in play. Some places that are newer and/or perhaps don't get mentioned as much as the usual Gingerman/Blind Tiger/Rattle N Hum reccos:

    One Mile House
    Fool's Gold
    Randolph Beer
    Marshall Stack
    Alphabet City Beer Co

Guilty Goose on 23rd b/w 6th and 7th. I buy the beer for them so I might be a little biased... 8-line of regularly rotating craft and good food!

I thought the Guilty Goose, which never gets any mention on discussions about great NYC bars, had a stellar list when I was there last summer. And their bartenders really knew how to pour a proper glass of beer.

The one in bold is well known in these parts.

I had a great afternoon at Alphabet City Beer Co. not too long ago. We were meeting there in advance of a lunch at Zum Schneider, so geography played a main role in selecting it. But we wound up heading back after lunch for a few more rounds, because they had a very nice selection of well-tended beers, and a great laid-back vibe. Good call on that one; I'll keep the others in mind for later trips.

Echo the Spitzer's Corner sentiment. Went there last year and was pleasantly surprised.
Fraunces Tavern way, WAY, downtown was a very pleasant experience recently.

BXL Cafe on 43rd is tits for the Belgian stuff. Phenomenal muscles too. Zum Schneider is underappreciated too.

I cut my teeth in the Peculiar Pub on Bleecker in my 20's. I don't know what it's like now, but that was my favorite bar for years.

Hmm interesting - I work near their east side location. Never been, but may have to check then out soon

Though sounds like I may need to hit the gym beforehand to fit in properly....!

Very very infrequently, to the extent that the answer is no.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing - the couple of times I've been there I've stumbled on a couple of gems. But it's been a while since I last visited.
