Yeah, I find that reading reviews helps me find words to describe the taste or smell whenever I can't think of an accurate description.

I don't read reviews as often as I write them, but I definitely like to read other reviews after I write up my own, just to compare notes. It's truly interesting to see what flavors and aromas other people have picked up in comparison to your own experience. I think it's fun to read some and think, "Hey! I got that too!" or "Woah, this guy just explained what I was tasting, but couldn't decipher!"

Not to mention, I often refer to reviews on my smartphone when I'm in the bottle shop and haven't heard of a beer and am curious of what to expect.

i generally like reviews before i've tasted, and the reason i like review over number is that i care about specific flavors or mouthfeel elements that some might see as virtues, others as flaws. people really try to be objective i think, at least enough people do.

it's often the case that someone is like "this IPA sucks, it's too hoppy! all grapefruit!" and they give a low score. but i want that grapefruit! people complain about that reviewer, "don't drink IPAs if you don't like them!" but that reviewer helped me if they're not overreacting to the hops. you know? i don't care that they don't like it, but i do care that they accurately described the flavor to me.

    edit: yeah, same here, definitely.

I will review. It is my duty. My palate is shite but I will not "rate". Never. Thank you to those that appreciate the time I take to do so.

    I read some after reviewing.

I don't care if she makes $500,000/yr, makes you dinner daily or can suck-start a Harley-Davidson. Punt and find a suitable companion.

If it was my review for Sublimely Self Righteous it got reported and deleted. Might have been one by Khiasmus though. I love his early stuff.

    Yeah, I read reviews.

I read the reviews on here before I pretty much buy anything anymore...yup, even at the store in front of the cooler. I liken it to car shopping, only much more important.

Now that the BA app is finally out, I read reviews while sitting on the john and gotta say, I read them with much more clarity now.

I have to confess to being a bit of a lurker. I do write out reviews in longhand and have done a few hundred in such fashion. My mood on reviews varies based mostly on my self-assuredness. If I am noting multiple things on nosing and tasting then often I will ignore reviews, if something is particularly reticent for me, reading a review will often reveal what I'm looking to convey. That being said, I do feel like I should give back to the community and post my reviews online. For those who dismiss just the numbers, a lot of thought have gone into mine before adding them. Fives should be awfully precious but not unattainable.

Wow, this thread just keeps on going. In my opinion it illustrates the issue with "hads". They clutter up the site and add nearly nothing to the content other than adding beers and places to the database. In my opinion, that alone is of value to everybody. I see the obvious necessity for the"Hads"in higher usage, for a website that is paramount. Mixing these two concerns as well as this site does has to be a difficult and time consuming effort. I have seen user recommendations utilized so I know the administrators (Bros) pay attention to the contributors. For this, I am grateful.
I would wish one thing though, a toggle button on the "recent beer reviews" page to toggle off "Hads" One of my favorite things to do was look at recent beers and read down through dozens of reviews in a row.

I think it is essential now for me to write reviews than just tick a beer. It's a good practice. I love to read reviews , I learn things about beer, Production, Flavors , and smells. You know how boring this site would be if had no reviews!!!! Unacceptable!

Those 18 beer drinkers enjoyed it, and I would give it a try if I saw it. If I did not like it, it would not be the first time I was disappointed. I am not going to trust anyones words more than I trust their numbers.

As a Bruin, he is my rival, but as a beer drinker, we're on the same page. Makes me sound like a stalker, but we must live in the same area and drink a lot of the same stuff.

I hope to get there some day. Sorry to sound boring but my excuse is i just want to sound like I know what I'm talking about though I have written some. Right now, I have BA'S to look up to read what they say and learn the trade.
