Complicated thing to answer, because I have to guess why you are asking it?

Humm, seems folks dislike the hads. I think folks are forgetting why you have an account so you can track what You like. If I review its not FOR you, its a place where I can record my thoughts for ME. No matter who your are, you are never going to enjoy beer the same as me. Sure we can taste differences and the similarities etc. I used to write down every beer I had new. of course I predate the internet and the 1976 start of the micro brews. My notes though are NOT formal reviews, never have been. Its more of why I like it, will I have it again, was it expensive kind of thing.

That said I enjoy many reviews. I enjoy place reviews the most and its why I found this site. Beer I can try and judge for me, but a place now that is a trip. Even the most expensive beer outside the nuts range of Utopias is under 20 bucks usually. So its never a bank breaker to try 1.

Still I make notes and I like the hads, FOR ME.

I always ignored the highs and in fact I always go to the low side first. I also have many 5's why not? (I bought it I drank it), I long ago knew the numbers on here and like any statistic is total BS. IT's like reading locals reviews of local places. 92% (yep made that figure up) of the time its overrated. I take it all with a grain of salt and check more than 1 source. So its a crazy contradictory thing at times.

I also know my list of top whatever will never match this sites or anyone else. I think that is a good thing. Still as inaccurate and biased as this site is, I still enjoy it.:grinning:

IF your on here thinking the number tell the story you fooling yourself. IMHO.

just my 2 cents of another silly beer question.:grimacing::grimacing::grimacing::rolling_eyes:

It would be cool if the pure numbers ratings were segregated from the actual word reviews in different sections.

Me, for all sorts of reasons. When I really like something, who else did, how did it rate, when I really hate something, did others feel the same? etc... Should I? Shouldn't I? Which breweries are good in an area? Etc...

Heck, I've probably given more brewery reviews than I have beer reviews.

Absolutely; while everyone's tastes will vary, I find a beer review informative insofar as how much hoppiness to expect, how much citrus / bourbon / coffee / chocolate, etc. I've found the reviews to be so useful, in fact, that I'm trying to take the time to review as many beers as possible, rather than just assigning a rating and moving on.

I read the reviews and enjoy them, that's one of great things about BA. If someone takes time to write a good review then I might value that more then just a score which takes 1sec to input.

FYI, two things: Each beer does come with a small box you can tick to show reviews only. So unless you are asking for something else that alread exists. Second, according to the Bros they did a statistical comparison between the numberical scores provided by reviewers and the numerical scores provided by raters and did not find a statistically significant difference. So lumping them together actually does make sense to beef up confidence in usefulness of the numberical scores for those who want to use them.

I will read reviews on a beer im having. it was a good way for me to learn what im tasting and pick things out I might have missed when i got started over 10 years ago. in fact when im looking at reviews before i decide to purchase a beer i find myself filtering and looking at the worst ranked reviews! does anyone look at the poor reviews too?

I'll look at the reviews for a beer/place ahead of time just to have an idea of what to expect, but a somewhat negative review has never kept me from buying a beer or going to a place. It might though if it said something along the lines of "...surprised to see the cage full of dead puppies as we entered the establishment..." :grimacing:

What I was referring to was the way it used to be before "hads" on the recent beers list (click on beers at the top of the page) What happens now is in order to read a review you have to click on the beer then click the hads off button which sometimes leaves you at a dead end because the beer was added by a ticker and there are no reviews of the beer> Total waste of time.

    I read them fairly often.
When I'm deciding on the last couple bottles for the mix n match 6 pack ... when I'm trying to decide whether to try something unfamiliar ... when it looks interesting, but the bomber bottle is on the pricey side ... when I'm just plain curious...

Yes, always. I try to read at least a few for every beer and typically look at them after I complete my own tasting notes. Best feature of this site, in my view.

Occasionally I like to check in while I'm drinking a beer to see if others are on the same page as me.

I honestly don't look at too many reviews, unless it's one by the bros.

We tend to be on the same wavelength with our feelings about things, so I really only look at the overall rating, and then read theirs if there is one.

Nothing against people who rate and not review, but the number associated with your tick means absolutely nothing to me. I always read reviews

I can't help but notice that most written reviews have a significant level of deviation from simple ratings. I feel people who write actual reviews are more reliable, because they are actually putting thought into what they're drinking. Guaranteed. Plus, the written reviews avg. rating's are more in line with how I feel about a certain brew a good portion of the time. I remember when I first started lurking on here (2011), almost every rating had a review attached. Now, they are few and far between, and for new beers? You REALLY gotta scroll for written reviews.
