    So, turns out I'm a fool. All excited to try the "Jamil" extract hefeweizen recipe from the Brewing Classic Styles book and I just realized his recipe calls for a full boil starting with 7 gallons. I do not have the pot to do this yet so I need to adjust this recipe for a partial boil.

    His recipe:
    O.G. 1.050
    F.G. 1.012
    Boil: 60min
    Pre-Boil Volume: 7 gallons
    Pre-Boil Gravity: 1.043
    Extract: Wheat LME (4 *L) 8.6lbs.
    Hops: Hallertau 4% AA, 60min 0.8oz
    Yeast: WLP300
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    I will be doing a partial boil. I could do anywhere from a 2.5 gallon to 3.5 gallon boil and top off with water at the end to about 5.25 - 5.5 gallons so I'll have a little over 5 gallons for bottling day.

    If I do this, how can I find out how to adjust how much LME to use? I'm seeing online recipes ranging from 4lbs to 6.6lbs. Hopefully this will be easier to answer than my yeast pitching rate question from the other day!

    Use the full amount. It will still dissolve in 3 gallons. You want your gravity to be the same at the end of the partial boil ncluding added water as you would have with a full boil including evaporation.

    It's the hops that would change, but only by a few percent. [Personally, I wouldn't change that either.]

    For a hefe, I would probably change nothing at all (not even hops), i.e brew your recipe as is, except for the initial water volume. FWIW, this recipe will give you a fairly big hefe. IMO, a post-boil OG of about 1.048 is the sweet spot. (This recipe looks a bit bigger than that.)

    split the boil (and hops) into more than one boiling pot. easy solution.
