I hope it trades for shit, everyone hates it and everything goes back to normal.

This is the new normal for all the great breweries. Toppling Goliath can't even hold annual releases at their brewery because of the crush they anticipate. Cigar City mishandles a release and it becomes national (2nd page) news. People line up in sub-zero temperatures for hours to get their hands on Central Waters anniversary beers. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

New Glarus has been on the national map for a long time. But now that sours are sky-rocketing in popularity, New Glarus has got to cash in. It wouldn't surprise any folks out in California- the sour craze hit out there about ten years ago. Now, the most popular nights at beer bars and brewpubs aren't barrel-aged stout nights. They're sour beer nights.

Lucky for us, New Glarus only distributes in Wisconsin and isn't particularly easy to get to for anyone outside of the Midwest.

We should be fighting against that mentality instead of just lying down or going along with it. Nothing is ever just the way it is. It starts with us as individual people and grows to become the collective.

If everyone thinks they need to get their hands on a beer because it trades high, what do you think is gonna happen? If everyone just takes what they get and are happy with that, would you get a different outcome?

There's always gonna be some dick who takes advantage but we can't all over compensate for those few people who we let spoil it for all of us.

Plus I seriously doubt NG is just "cashing in" they've been doing this longer than most. This is just the culmination of years of hard work to say they are going along with a fad, sort of undermines all that work. I'll be happy once beer nerds move onto the next big thing and NG is just gonna keep doing their thing because its what they love.

I'm pretty sure NG cashed in years ago when Spotted Cow became the de facto state beer.

I thought Spotted Cow as the state bird.

Agreed. I would guess the R&D beers are actually money losers for NG. Other than the fact that they keep the beer geeks satisfied that they are on the leading edge.

    whew

i rolled up to the brewery around 8:30 last year and there were maybe 20-30 people ahead of me.

guess i'll skip it this year if the line is already starting at 5:30. might still be drunk at that point.

Being back up in Wisconsin, I got to try the NG Berliner Weisse, Oud Bruin, and Scream IIPA. All are damn good in their own right. The Berliner was absolutely over-carbonated, but still damn tasty for a berliner. The Oud Bruin, good, but not great yet, it definitely needs more time to mature to add more tartness, I didn't get any off flavors from it, it was just a little sweet right now. The Scream IIPA, phenomenal, that is all on that one.

I had a bottle that was the same. Just opened a serendipity and it is rusty as well...

Most likely an isolated batch of caps. I haven't found any other rust.

What part of the state are you in? Try using the beer finder on the New Glarus website.

Yeah Oud Bruin was pouring out of the crevices of Kenosha (Woodman's, etc) last weekend. Unfortunately, I was looking for Scream which appears to have been cleaned out of all points Kenosha.

The first round of Scream is hard to find in Milwaukee at this point. There are a few Pick n Saves that still have 4-packs, but I think it's run it's course- which is a good thing. I would expect a new back to hit mid-to-late August. Someone posted on here that Dan plans on brewing it so it's available well into Fall- that means at least two more fresh batches.

I hope you are right & more is on the way. I could drink this year round. There have been two batches I think thus far (1484 & 1644). NG schedule only shows it through July but the schedule only goes thru July so hopefully it extends on the next update. Was able to get a couple 4pks but had to go to Racine (gasp!). Did see a Berliner on the shelf but left it for someone else to find.

1644 is still drinking damn good, not sure if I have any 148 left. Folks in CA, NY, and LA who I've sent it to all love it. I would expect NG to keep this beer going as long as they can. They don't have a true IPA/IIPA in their lineup, maybe this will fit the bill.

Maybe, but isn't two, two too many?
